iPhone data plan dubbed the iPlan?

No, we’re not kidding. Although iPlan might simply be used internally to refer to the Apple iPhone data plan, this streak of info came from a pretty high up source of ours, and it looks to be accurate. The iPhone data plan will be around $34.99-$44.99 and feature unlimited data, and either 2000 text messages, or unlimited text messages (we still have not confirmed which, but unlimited text messages would be awesome). For anyone trying to snuff the FedEx driver on his way in to deliver the iPhones, be prepared, because all FedEx drivers are said to be assigned, and delivering to stores in teams. Well, what if we raid the stockroom the night before, we’ll end up with a bunch of iPhones right? Wrong. Apple’s cleverness was revealed when they announced the 6:00PM release time to make sure stores would have just got shipments, and couldn’t sell them earlier. Are we putting all our faith in FedEx? Everything appears so as FedEx will be shipped the iPhones on Tuesday, or Wednesday, and the iPhones will sit in FedEx local sort facilities and hubs until Friday, where they will then be delivered.

This is a better plan than you generally get through AT&T for unlimited data. Currently they charge $49 for unlimited data. The cheapest data rate available is $24 for 10MB and that doesn’t include any txt messaging.

yeah, its only for those teens that have parents with more money than sense.

one question for BG, this “streak of info” seems really vague, i mean that is basically saying that its going to be alot like the existing PDA plans and maybe they will include text with it. i guess that “high up” source did not want to go out on limb and say “hey i really am guessing” or is this a BG generated story to get the BG name on all the rumor websites…

at&t already has a data plan for all fo it’s non smart or pda phones for 39.99 which includes unlimited text pics videos and data. Given the hype for the iphone i figured the data plans would be much higher. hey fed ex guy take lots of pictures.

$40 is actually cheaper than a lot of carriers charge for their data plans. But that had better include using the iPhone as a modem for a computer or it is _WAY_ out of line for a phone-only data plan.

Personally I like the $20 unlimited plan I have with T-Mo. Or the $6 unlimited web and email plan I have on two other phones.

$40/month for data is crazy talk. Smart consumers know to get T-Mobile or Sprint plans if they want to get unlimited data at reasonable prices. $40/month for voice (or even $30 for 200 minutes + N/W) + $15 for unlimited data on the Treo 755p is $55/month. Add in the $280 for the phone, that’s $1600 for 2 years. The iPhone is AT LEAST $75/month, which is $2300 for years. If it’s $45/month for the iPlan & with the 8GB version, that’s $2640 for 2 years.

The AT&T ads lately have been touting unlimited text messages “within the AT&T network”.

I’d rather have 500 messages to any phone.

Has anyone stoped to think that they will lower prices and offer subsidized phones after all the icraze has worn off and the icrazed people have forked out as much as they possibly can. You know…take advantage of the rich and stupid (or maybe just stupid who really don’t have the money), then try and sell to the rest of us.

It’s kind of like selling airplane tickets. Once sales slow down, they will have to start offering incentives to meet all the sales goals. That’s where my bet is. I predict you will see incentives increase as the year goes on. Decreased data rates, $50 off the phone, then $100 off the phone, etc.

From a business standpoint it makes sense to profit as much as possible from the hype. Then offer the first round of incentives. Once you have sold to all those people, offer a second round of incentives, etc.

    BlackBerry® Personal Plan - 34.99 unlimited data

    BlackBerry® Personal Max with 1500 Messages - 44.99

PDA Personal Max with 1500 Messages - 44.99

    PDA Personal 20 MB - 34.99

So where is the shock about pricing coming from? I’m not surprised because data is data whether it is being used for Blackberry email or iphone web browsing, they will charge the same. and BG again looks like your “streak” is exactly what they currently offer, thanks for the heads up.

If this pricing is correct, it strikes me that AT&T is making an enormous blunder. The iPhone is not primarily a business tool; it’s positioned as a media tool for non-business users (witness the recommendations that corporate IT shun the iPhone). I would have thought that Apple would have weighed in here, and pushed AT&T to adopt consumer-friendly pricing. I was expecting (OK, hoping) that there would be a single iPhone plan. It would include unlimited data, and progressively decreasing cost per minute talked. This would have fit Apple’s general MO of offering zero or one options. And it would explain Verizon’s refusal of the iPhone better than the kickback of monthly fees to Apple scheme that has been floated (although reluctance to give up music download fees was probably partly responsible as well).

The keyboard will not make the iPhone flop. Nor will the lack of GPS. Nor will AT&T’s substandard network, nor even AT&T’s substandard service. Pricing the overall package out of the reach of its target audience very likely will.

ya really. Considering your iPhone is an internet based phone having almost everything run of the internet, ex. (email, safari, stocks, weather, maps, youtube). There really isn’t any point of having this phone if you don’t have a data plan.

To get an unlimited data plan for one phone normally costs about $15-$20 alone, not to mention a $10 1500 text plan. and that leaves $5-$15 for minutes. I actually think is a good deal.

People have to understand that is is going to be a premium device, not a kids toy. You will have to pay the premium to buy it and use it. I personally will never own an Iphone, I will stick to a blackberry curve which does more in the long run than an iphone. Who cares about a touch screen….I want to laugh at the first idiot that drops it and breaks it and it p***ed that he has to buy one at retail for 1000 bucks.

The reason why T-Mobile has such cheap voice and data plans is becuase their voice and data coverage is much smaller and inferior to AT&T, VZW, and Sprint (see JD Power report on coverage and call quality). TMobile competes on price because it can’t compete with the bigger cell carriers on coverage.
