iPhone data plan dubbed the iPlan?

No, we’re not kidding. Although iPlan might simply be used internally to refer to the Apple iPhone data plan, this streak of info came from a pretty high up source of ours, and it looks to be accurate. The iPhone data plan will be around $34.99-$44.99 and feature unlimited data, and either 2000 text messages, or unlimited text messages (we still have not confirmed which, but unlimited text messages would be awesome). For anyone trying to snuff the FedEx driver on his way in to deliver the iPhones, be prepared, because all FedEx drivers are said to be assigned, and delivering to stores in teams. Well, what if we raid the stockroom the night before, we’ll end up with a bunch of iPhones right? Wrong. Apple’s cleverness was revealed when they announced the 6:00PM release time to make sure stores would have just got shipments, and couldn’t sell them earlier. Are we putting all our faith in FedEx? Everything appears so as FedEx will be shipped the iPhones on Tuesday, or Wednesday, and the iPhones will sit in FedEx local sort facilities and hubs until Friday, where they will then be delivered.

Sounds like a cocky move on Apple’s part.

Although this may help with the expected large number of new data plan users.

I’ll be glad when the 29th is here so they will stop talking about the release and move on to talking about how the phone actually is.

Holy mackerels, $35-$45?!?! That’s allot of moola. And they think there going to get 3 million people to do that? I’m sorry, but iPods are very common amongst kids, and there is no way that kids will be able to afford that type of monthly bill. And for older people, do they really expect people to go and drop the N95 or Blackberry’s just for some kids toy? I believe the ‘older crowd’ will prefer to have a proper (more respectable phone like a blackberry or Nokia. I’m very curious to see how it all turns out.

My prediction (I’m probably really wrong) that there will be a surplus of iPhones looking for homes after the first month if they really did make 3 million of them. I hope Apple knows what there doing, because it seems to me that the product is right, but the but the price is wrong. That’s why i believe the sidekick has excelled, it is pretty expensive for the actual phone, but then the plan is amazing at only $20 a month. I guess the iPhone is trying to be the rich mans sidekick?

The phone being 500 to begin with, then around a $40 data charge plus actual minutes and then add on taxes, The absolute minimum monthly bill i could see with an iPhone would be $80. There’s no way kids or parents alike are going to stump up that sort or money

Good luck iPhone. (Your going to need it!)

BTW, BG, your doing great, keep up the good work! I’m also interested in your opinion on this subject, do you think its going to be a best seller?

I just wish AT&T would simplify their data plans. I just looked at the BB plans and left confused on what to get. The cost are so close just make it the blackberry plan and be done. Simple will be better.

The cost when compared to BB is fine, although depending on the amount texts will make it more cost friendly. Now if this plan can be translated into other phones it might be good, in someways.

Yeah its expensive but at 35 it’s about the same as the Blackberry Personal Max plan so I think it will do alright. It will, however, be a problem for a lot more people if it gets pushed to 45.

Where is the issue here? this is a data device. the Palm’s and the 8525 cost $39.99 as does the Blackjack and include 1500 text, the bb is $29.99 plus $10 for 1500 text.
This device falls into the same category and should expect a similar plan.

Listen I’m 17 years old and I have been waiting for this phone for some time now. I’m not going to let this data plan get in my way, of course its expensive because its going to be amazing. I will be at my local ATT store on launch ready to get one and both my parents have no problem paying for the data plan. I know, consider myself extremely lucky and I will probably be one of the few kids at my school who actually has one. I am very thankful and I do see where Jasper is coming from.
    THANKS

Awesome, this will actually save me about 6 bucks a month with taxes. I’m paying 44.99 for my BB 8700 which doesn’t even offer wifi and until today didn’t really have an approved AOL/MSN/YAHOO chat program.

I pay $40 for my Treo 680’s data, and yes the iPhone is even more dynamic. It costs at&t money to support large packets of data from these PDA phones though a nationwide… uh, worldwide network.

Have fun syncing the iPhone with your movies and music. I have several family movies from my digi-recorder uploaded to my Treo - it’s great to have them on hand.

Also, wait a week for any returned iPhones. I am.

about as expected. i have an older BB plan at 29.99 but $40 is about what i expected. I mean really, its a pda that costs $500-$600 without tax - they are not going for the budget buyers.

You guys keep mentioning kids. I don’t think jobless kids are the demographic they are shooting for with a $600 phone. This is for people that can afford it, and there will be plenty of them. I do admit I am disappointed by the data plan especially because of the Edge speeds.

Does sending an email count as a text or data? I have never understood the longterm potential of SMS as convergence continues. I guess it is more of an IM conversation.

How do you know that fedex is getting $100 million for the delivery of the iPhones?

Jasper is right, I think that $20 would be the sweet spot for unlimited and maybe a $15 for 15mb.
They are going to have a lot of unhappy campers (literally if the lines are long enough).

What would be good is if they offered a $200 rebate if you signed up for the data plan.
If they want to sell 10 million in one year, they cannot ask at least $35 per month date + $35 per month voice + $5 per month taxes + $500 phone.

The only people who pay for ~$40 per month data plans are businesses, and from the sound of things, they are not going to get many business people (b/c of the lack of blackberry connect/goodlink & physical keyboard).
