Pentagon email system hacked

The guys at the Pentagon are really screwed this time. CNN is reporting that the Pentagon’s email servers were penetrated by an unknown assailant sometime on Wednesday. Roughly 1/3 of all email accounts were affected, with the entire system being taken offline while the competent IT department determined the root of the problem. 1,500 Pentagon employees are still without email. We would imagine that this would create quite a lull in productivity, right? This was a non-classified system, so nothing of extreme importance was at risk, but the fact remains that the security of the department in charge of the nation’s Armed Forces was significantly compromised. Nice job, guys. Seriously, great work.

I really enjoy reading about new gadgets here at BGR but it really weirds me out when you post about current events. Instead of just reporting what happened, you exaggerate the facts and I get enough of that from Fox News.

Screwed? How are they screwed? Seriously, did you read the article? They get hit with attacks hundreds of times every single day. It’s a wonder that we don’t hear about successful attempts more often if the IT dept. is truly as incompetent as you believe. And according to the article you linked to and others I found on Google News, they recognized the attack early enough to stop it from doing terrible damage. They also had a back up system in place (ie Blackberries) to minimize the inconvenience of the people affected. It sounds like they have their ducks in a row, so how are they screwed?? How will this affect productivity?? Significantly compromised?? It was a non-classified system. How is that significant if classified info was kept secure and people still had their Blackberries?

Perhaps this should be taken out of the “News” category and re-filed under “Opinion”?

@Betty, I think they do need to realize that these threats are always happeningand this is not the first time so when a secret system or some really weird server is attacked then they can repor otherwise remove.

@betty i agree 100%, they need to stick to new gadgets and stay away from news and opinion pieces. Really BG himself has most of the good gadget stories, the rest of these guys just troll the other sites to see what stories they can reuse. BG, you might need to keep an eye on content or people with cut out the middle men on the stories and go to the other “original” sites. Of course that does not apply to your breaking gadget stories

I can’t believe everything I read from an agency who is connected with other agencies that helped destroy the twin towers, then attempted to cover it up! Why would I? Now if there was some penetration into the computer systems and it was classified and there was information about the people of this country under certain laws wouldn’t they have to disclose that information to those whose information was possibly taken? Equal protection under the law? Now do they have motive to disclose or not disclose all the facts related to any penetration into their computer systems or data that has possibly been compromised?

Lets not forget computers and networking: If there is a connection to the computer it can be compromised.

The foundation there systems rely on are the same the rest of the networked systems.
