T-Mobile@Home launch extravaganza continues

Wow, what a day for prospective T-Mobile UMA customers. First, we bring word of the launch date and contest, and now some further details to wet your appetite. Chyea! We managed to get our hands on the official launch documents, detailing the launch events. It looks like T-Mobile is really pulling out all the stops for this one. Trying to steal some iPhone thunder, perhaps? Never that! Here’s what we know: The TV spots that will air on the 27th will, in fact, feature a guy named Jimmy. He will be wearing a bath robe. T-Mobile CSRs are being encouraged to wear gear sporting Jimmy’s ugly mug during the launch period. All CSRs will be wearing bath robes on July 3rd too. Why July 3rd, you ask? That happens to be the day of the contest we told you about. The first 100 people to show up at one of 11 select T-Mobile retail stores on the morning on the 3rd wearing a bath robe, will receive free T-Mobile@Home equipment and service for an entire year. Which 11 stores? You know we’ve got the inside track on that as well. The breakdown is right after the jump along with the leaked documents! Anyone crazy enough to hit a T-Mobile store at 9:00AM on July 3rd in full bath robe garb please let us know. We’ll be laughing right at you along with you.
UPDATE: Nokia 6086, and Samsung t409 product guides added along with T-Mobile D-Link, and Linksys HotSpot@Home routers!

What are the chances current tmobile wifi devices (here’s looking at you Dash) will be able to be upgraded to use this service?
Is UMA an actual physical channel such as 850/900/1800/1900…or is it simply using the 2.4GHZ WiFI spectrum leveraged by current (wifi) gen tmobile phones?

I’m curious to see if they’ll extend the free offer to existing customers. I’m campin my ass out at the Chicago store.

Its going to be very interesting to see if tmobile at home catches on and if it does I can see it totally improving Tmobiles ranking as a US wireless provider. It a bit of a gamble on tmobiles side but if they can promote it right it can easily change the quality of their network forever.
Paying $20 for unlimited calls is awesome but that’s not really the true benifit of UMA. When calling from a phone using UMA it uses wifi to connect the call intstead of connecting using standard GSM signal. If UMA phones take off it will increase T-mobile network footprint by large margins and decrease the congestion on their lines causing drop calls. With less stress on their network Tmobile could easily migrate their network to 3G.
This is really the first time that uma is being used to this scale in the United States so it might be slow in the begining with only 3 phones supporting uma at this time but I feel that their will be more soon. When it comes to non-smart phone Tmobile only sells nokias, samsung and moto’s. Samsung and Nokia can easily add uma chips to furture tmobile phones and as for smart phones they all have wifi except for the blackberries but if bg is right that could change soon.
Should be interesting.

About the international use on the UMA - that will be included when you are using HOT SPOTs outside the US. Because the service will include unlimited calling from a HOT Spot when outside of your home also. The phones should be no problem, but DO make sure you trasitioned over from the tower to WiFI once you reach these areas.
