AT&T iPhone launch deets: crowd control

Let’s say you work at an AT&T store somewhere as a sales rep. How are you ever going to combat those unruly, apple-loving, crazed citizens on June 29th? One word. Stanchions. You know, the stuff they line up on the sides of red carpets? But Diddy ain’t comin’ through, just regular people trying to get their iPhone fix. We told you about all AT&T stores closing at 4:30PM, and reopening at 6:00PM, and now it is confirmed in the this very document once again. One more confirmation from the leaked doc, is that AT&T stores should "inform landlords in all locations (except enclosed malls) that your store hours will be extended until 10:00PM on Friday, June 29th." There is also an extremely cheesy mock conversation with what stores should tell their landlords to try and con them to let them stay open late. Well, have fun guys. Apple has made it so every single person in America can drop by an AT&T store after normal business hours and pick an iPhone up right there. What about inventory? It has been rumored that all AT&T stores are receiving between 100-250 handsets in the first initial shipment. But those will be gone by 6:02PM. Hit the documents below!

It would be nice to actually include the images to what your talking about, instead of talking about including them and not.

2K locations nationally or something like that. Give each one 150 on average for 300K at launch. Sounds like a good, round, production-run possible number.

They will be. This document specifically talks about AT&T stores. While Apple stores should be selling the iPhone at 6:00PM as well, their launch plans might differ.

I’m an admitted Apple enthusiast (call me a fanboy if you’re into that kind of thing) but I honestly don’t think every store is going to be swarmed with hundreds of people trying to buy this thing. My (uninformed) guess is that 2/3 of traffic will be people who just want to see and play with it and maybe 1/20 will be people hoping to resell them on ebay.

However, I guess it’s best that they plan for a best-case scenario versus being less prepared like some of the recent video game console launches.

BG, do you think employees at Apple stores will be trained to activate/credit check/port phone numbers for ATT on the spot June 29? Or will you have to purchase the iPhone, and activate it later with ATT?

Apple store employees have not yet received training or info on activating the iPhone. We have an AT&T store in our mall, not far from our Apple Store. Will be interesting to see if the crowds clash or overlap.

I went to the AT&T store in a mall near my house and they said there will be wristbands handed out before they close at 4:30 to whoever says they want to purchase one.

As far the number of units a store gets, it’s all speculation right now! I’ve heard 40 units for most stores on the 29th, but it’s been said that stores could also receive up to 100-150 units to satisfy initial first day demands. We’ll all just have to wait and see as usual! I think stores getting 5 or 6 units is a little extreme and probably won’t happen. But it should definitely be interesting to see how the stores handle the crowds, I’ll be there for sure on the 29th picking one up to play with over the weekend!

@Ted I do but I enjoy reading blogs and all the iPhone hoopla is now getting annoying. And as a test of my life, I train 3/4 days a week for what you might ask. Triathlons so a life I have just that the patience with this has run out.

The question is, will Apple Stores be getting more or less units than AT&T stores? I have a choice of going to either and don’t know which one to go to!

I went into an apple store on Saturday in atlanta, ga and they said that Apple has worked it out with ATT so that they can activate phones in store. I had the same concern… They said that they took an hour long process and turned it into a 10 minute proces…how that is possible, I’m not sure. But I honestly got that info from an Apple Employee!
