BG’s Corner: Motorola A1200 Ming to hit US shores?

We often get tips and other bits of information from reliable sources that sometimes don’t make it into posts. Maybe we don’t have a picture or document, but it’s still info that we’d like to share. When information like this surfaces, we’ll enter them into BG’s Corner (think Coffee Talk for techies). Look for these posts to appear weekly, sometimes more regularly. If you’re a Motorola Ming fan but never really got around to picking one up, you should be in for a treat! We’ve got intel that the Motorola A1200 Ming was supposed to launch on Cingular, but was recently scrapped for one reason or another. The catch, is that Motorola is said to working on a 3G version of the device, except it has 850MHz/1900MHz WCDMA bands, better known as AT&T 3G. It supposedly has new features like a new animation scheme for the menus, and a higher resolution video capture which will be CIF instead of QCIF. The launch date is currently unknown. That’s it for now!

While cute and again nice use of the Neutrons I don’t see why they decided to finally release a phone that is in a way somewhat old. By the time this phone is released their will others that are even more powerful. In addition we will have others with a more stable version of mobile linux already out. So BG this corner is too small for Ming.

A 3G version would be a welcome addition to Ming. But please, Motorola, make it tri-band UMTS/HSDPA *and* enable EDGE by default! Am I begging for much?

I’ve played with it. It’s linux based. It’s nice phone, but the PDA functions are not that great. The Business card scanner is a very nifty feature that I would love to see for my Blackjack.

In the English version of the A1200 manual, the date on the phone is October 18, 2008. I don’t know about that, but I heard it will get a WiMobile makeover on its way here.

I have been eagerly awaiting the release of the Moto Ming for quite a few months now, whether it be EGDE or 3G enabled. But I am puzzled as to why Motorola is going to the Windows Mobile platform because of people stating that the Linux/JUIX platform will not support 3G ?

If this is true then why is ATT able to use the Linux/JUIX platform in the Motorola RAZR2 V9 ? It also has 3G.

Here us a URL or 2 to back this up, look @ the specs on these pages….

Well Rob W mainly the reason ATT is able to use the juix platform in the razr 2 v9 is that you are an idiot.

the v9 does not use a java/linux platform.

If is good to see more people hopping on the failboat every day.

Hey cash…. or should it be cashless ?

If you know how to click on a URL… AND if you know how to look up specs on cell phones, then you will see that on August, note that this is a pre-release date, that Mobiledia.com states that the Form Factor is “Clamshell / Linux OS”. The second URL from Phonescoop.com states that the V9 uses Synergy platform. I posted both URLs for somparison so that people who might know more information would give an answer.

I actually own the V9 now because my 2 year contract was up on my old ATT phone. And guess what, the insurance is not offered on it because my first one crapped out on me. You get one replacement via the warranty program & after that you are only covered for 90 more days. I believe the tech support lady told me that the insurance was sub-contracted out too.

None the less I will more than likely purchase the Ming when it comes out anyways & ask ahead of time if it can be insured.

Oh yeah, I did use some sources to back up what I wrote, where were yours before the phone was released ? Do you own either phone ? And what does “If is good” mean ? I only wanted more info from other intelligent people who might read these posts… obviously you do not qualify !
