Palm Gandolf specs surface
Remember that hideous new Palm concept that showed up in the wild? The more we learn about the Gandolf, the more we realize that Palm is serious about making the darn thing. Some specs have surfaced to complement the spy shots, and while they are predictably underwhelming, they’re not quite as disappointing as we expected. Check out the specifics below:
- Naming convention will be Treo 5XX
- One version with Windows Mobile 6 Standard, the other is a new non-touchscreen edition of the Palm OS
- Multiple colors
- 135 grams; 117 x 65 x 13.8 mm
- 2.4 inch QVGA screen with 65k colors
- 2 megapixel camera
- Bluetooth 2.0 w/ A2DP support
- 3G + HSDPA
- 256 MB on board memory with 64 MB of RAM
Design foibles aside, these aren’t too shabby. The inclusion of 3G is a huge step in the right direction, and everything else seems to be about on par with their current Treos, with the exception of a marginally improved camera. One thing worth noting is that while Windows Mobile has proven itself useful without touchscreen support, the Palm OS has no such track record. It will be interesting to see how well they’re able to tweak the existing (and aging) platform to do away with touchscreen input. Only time will tell, we suppose.
I’m not impressed Palm. Where’s your Linux based offering?

Specs are the same as most devices coming out these days. If anything they might want to make it with a larger drive(flash memory) and then maybe consider it better also if they add a better browser you might have an actual competition.

Well, Motorola has be eschewing PIE and offering Opera Mobile instead as the default (at least for the Q q9h).
Palm has also made a deal with Opera lately (see Foleo)and I believe they hinted they were going to use it in their future devices…

Brilliant Palm, with the iPhone around the corner, Palm knows best and ditches the touchscreen. Bye bye all my 3rd party applications - the sole reason I wouldn’t ever consider an iPhone. Now I get a pathetic copy of it? Bye Palm, so long buddy - I’ll never forget you.

Excited about qVGA on a Treo! WiFi is no big deal for me since I don’t use it as often when I had it on board my other devices, I do use 3G a lot so that’s good.
RE: usefulness without touchscreen. So this one is Windows Mobile 6 Standard [i.e. Smartphone]? If so the 750v may be my first and last palm device. For me it’s WM6 Pro over Standard any day.

Developers will certainly enjoy updating their apps again to support 240×320, 240×240, and now 320×320 which has never been a native or supported display config. While I do agree its a nicer display resolution compared to 240×240 it was PITA waiting for 240×240 apps, how long before others update?

Applications are coming that make wifi a must in next generation services. Palm is moving at a snails pace in innovation. Just when you think they were going to make there move they surprise everyone with the Foleo. WTH?

Well I guess most of us will be going over to Blackberry. The touchscreen made Palm special and valuable. I don’t suppose Pam will read these comments but for me: no touchscreen no Palm!!!
