Motorola Q9m (Nelson) Hands On!

Yeah, you’re probably looking at the first live shots of the new Motorola Q9m for Verizon Wireless, and ain’t it a beauty? The Q9m uses a regular miniUSB port instead of Motorola’s new favorite microUSB, which makes charging and connecting a lot easier. The Q9m also looks like it supports miniSD cards for memory expansion, and has a nice red glow around the d-pad. This Q9M brings back the scroll wheel that the GSM Q9 lacked. Another Verizon customization was the home screen. It displays shortcuts for commonly used applications like the camera, messaging, web, music in a circular pattern on the screen. The icons in Windows Mobile are completely customized, and look for VCast music support on here as well. The QWERTY keyboard is fantastic just like the other Q9 we previewed, and the device actually has a metallic plastic on the front, and a black rubberized back. It feels good in your hands, and doesn’t seem like you would drop it easily. It’s a tad bit thicker than the GSM Q9 but that is understandable seeing as how miniSD cards are supported, but the camera appears to be only 1.3 megapixels. We’re gonna’ give the Motorola Q9m 3.5 BGs. Want more? Click on over to our exclusive gallery below!

    It’s “you’re” – not “your.” I guess I need to apply for a writing position in BGR…

doesn’t matter if the Windows Mobile app is still crappy. its pretty bad when the Verizon reps try to talk you out of the Q, and it’s their product!

PS BG, love you, but dude one word: manicure! If you are gonna have your fingers in these pics, get thee to a nail salon. That one hangnail of yours should have it’s own social security #, dog.

I also think it looks ugly… the red glow looks cheap and the spacebar is still small despite the fact that they removed all the shortcut keys from the Q9h.

BG, why did they get rid of the circular DPad?
Also, is this EVDO Rev A as rumored?

BG, do you think you can find out if Verizon had some exclusivity on this phone for some time like they did on the Q? If so, how long? Do you know when this phone will come to Sprint?

It looks nice and the rubberized back is a plus.

Hey do you guys think that verizion will require you to get a data plan when you get this phone? i really wanted the new blackberry, just to use it as a normal phone because i text a lot, but they require a 40 dollar a month data plan. Am i going to run into the same problem with all smart phones?

I’m in the same boat. You are only required to get a data plan on Verizon if you get a BB. Smartphones don’t require the data plan.

Moto seems to have made a few design changes to outside other than dropping a few buttons at the bottom.

GSM: Round Center button – CDMA Rectangle button
GSM: World & Mail icon buttons at top – CDMA – nothing
    GSM: microSD – CDMA miniSD
GSM: Keyboard configuration is different compared to the CDMA version when you press the up key to get numbers and symbols, they differ. Wonder why?

I have the currently released Q (Black from Verizon not sure of the actual version name). I wanted to mention to bg that the current Q supports miniSD already, so I’m not sure why the new version is thicker. My 2 cents.

What, if anything, does the Verizon release of this phone mean for the prospects of the BlackBerry Curve coming to Verizon?

    fwaits says:

It wouldn’t surprise me if this thing wasn’t just a remodeled case over nearly the same internal hardware of the original Q. Notice the placement of the mic and the screen that seem to exactly match where they would be on a normal Q? Especially if this has a 1.3MP camera. Would also explain the rectangular D pad rather than round like the GSM version not to mention the scrollwheel. I dunno, could be wrong, but it makes me wonder.
