Blockbuster to crown Blu-Ray its winner

While this is unlikely to send HD-DVD to the Laser Disc bin, those that have been cheering for HD-DVD to win the NexGen format game are about to be dealt a huge setback. Blockbuster, who has been testing both formats in stores to determine the viability of carrying one or the other, is expected to announce on today, that Blu-Ray will now be the exclusive NexGen product in the majority of its stores. Only 250 of the test stores will continue to carry HD-DVD for rent, as consumer preference showed a whopping 70% of HD titles were of the Blu-Ray variety. Blockbuster.com will also continue to carry HD-DVD, for those that rent their flicks online. Interesting to note: Consumers apparently cared more about the exclusive title differences, rather than price, in their decision making process.

I know this prolly isnt proper but Blu-Ray sucks and just because blockbuster thinks they win it still has yet to be determined. HD-DVD’s sound is just MUCH better. Picture is crisp on BOTH on my LCD. I know everyone has their opinion and mine is for HDDVD.

This might also be the amount of PS3’s that people have now, where HD-DVD needs to be through the addition of the player. I don’t own a HD player but if the signs of ‘rot’ that been showing up HD-DVD will get more time in the spotlight soon enough. Blockbusters influence is much higher than people think so this will be a wait and see thing.

Now if only Blockbuster were still relevant … People who are interested in the HD formats probably aren’t renting at Blockbuster anymore, opting for a service like NetFlix.

I think it’s still to early to tell who will win this “format war” and I do agree with Rob that more people will order from netflix or some other place like such.

One benefit of HD-DVD is you can still play your current and favorite DVD’s on the same player. I don’t have to support the Blu Ray family f movies and still enjoy near HD quality with a standard DVD (mine upconverts and so does our Denon Receiver). Sony is being sued on so many fronts and with all of the bad press the heat is on, also how long before they install spyware on your PS3 or Blu Ray player?

Stick with the same dvds. I don’t know but it seems like every 6 months or so something comes out that helps you watch your movies in the so called “movie theater” quality. But to me its all the same or slightly different unless you have a movie theater.
