BlackBerry Pearl 2 “Komet” reveals itself

I guess we shouldn’t expect a review unit from RIM, right? The BlackBerry Pearl 2 or "Komet" (internal codename) has secretly whispered some fantastic specs and features in our ear today. Some earth-shattering BlackBerry Pearl 2 new features revealed? We could start off with the external MicroSD card slot, or the stereo Bluetooth, but that’s not that interesting to most. The really interesting, and juicy details, start now! The BlackBerry Pearl 2,or Komet, or 8110, or 8120, or 8130 will feature a 3.2 megapixel camera. The difference with this camera, as reported to us, is that it will be used horizontally. Just like other high end camera phones. The colors we reported here first were pretty much spot on; metallic red, blue, gold, and black. In addition to the new camera, the P2 will include Windows Media DRM & MTP support. Also look for motion lock, and a built-in 3.5 mm headset jack just like the BlackBerry Curve. For all you freaks out there who love to hear yourself speak, the Voice Notes application has been enhanced and given a complete makeover; it will be housed as a component within the "Media" application (now up to five multimedia applications) and allow you to save all of your recordings and play them back upon command from your new collection of self-therapy sessions. Oh yeah, RIM is planning a mega huge marketing initiative to launch the Pearl 2. We have a fantastic rundown of the features and specs so make sure you check them out, after the break!
- 3.2 megapixel camera
- Flash improvement and 6x digital zoom
- 3.5 mm Headset Jack
- External MicroSD slot
- SureType device
- New keypad technology
- 240×260 LCD display

- 64MB of memory
- Streaming media support
- 4.5 hours of talk time/15 days of standby
- Stereo Bluetooth

- Improved mechanical design, and build quality

Nicely put, Michael.
I too don’t see Apple crippling anything, for that matter. Calling it a “fad, must have phone” is an understatement!
On the business front, I don’t see myself venturing off towards that direction - getting an iPod with cellular phone capabilities (among other capabilities). But, I’m sure that there will be a select margin (not a large margin) that will get the iPhone just to say they had “a revolutionary communicator.” Unless it can WOW me with something other than multi-touch and other irrelevant specs, I doubt I can call it revolutionary.

Pearl 2 looks great. I’ll probably wait it out once it arrives officially to see what issues it may have. I came from using windows mobile devices and am used to a lot of bugs. I love my blackberry and have since purchased 2 more within the past month.
Personally it suits all my needs and then some in a tight, small, and efficient package without all the nonsense that comes in other platforms. Yes the touch screens are nice, but the function of all BB devices is what will triumph ultimately.

This is off topic a little. Did anyone see this announcement on Sprint EV-DO Rev A being available?

Waiting for the new Pearl/Komet… Just want to know which carrier will offer it. I have Verizon…and have been waiting and waiting. -As all VZW customers have//

I would rather it be released as a Sprint Hybrid with NEXTEL walkie-talkie…. AT&T has walkie-talkie on their Pearls it would make sense for Sprint to do this with theirs since they own NEXTEL!!!!

Wow wifi capable it already got me there well I think this might be the best blackberry to come out too bad it doesn’t have a qwerty keyboard though huge disapointer.

Chris… the Pearl cannot have a full QWERTY keyboard because 1) the keys would have to be super small to accommodate such; smaller keys would render the keyboard unusable; or 2)RIM would have to increase the Pearl’s size, which defeats the purpose and design of the Pearl, a super small, if not the world’s smallest, multimedia smartphone.
For the full QWERTY crowd Pearl has the larger models, such as the Curve or 8800.

Hey Boy Genius,
I’m not sure who said Komet to you but the codename is Comet. The phone is also an EDGE phone aka Cingular?
There is another phone with EVDO, different codename.
Take that info the bank.

To All Haters of SureType,
You really have to use it to appreciate it. I have had a BB 7130e since Dec., 2005 and have found that my typing skills continue to become faster and more accurate!! What really makes SureType a joy to use is the space between the keys on the keyboard and the ‘Custom Word List.’
This list will continue to grow, and therefore when you are typing, the OS recognizes what you are typing. All you have to do is type the word in its ENTIRETY, then press the ’space’ key, and like magic, the word will show up on the screen. After awhile, you will start using ‘Shortcuts’ and your typing will get even faster!!
Hope this will help anyone who is contemplating getting the BB Pearl 2.

The Pearl 2 will have GPS included.

Can you please give information about this gps? Is it built-in? SiRF III or III+ ? Some other chipset?
Any information on the Pearl 2’s gps specifics would be a plus!
Thanks,
Firefishe

I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on getting the current pearl (I have T-Mobile), or if I should wait for the Komet/Comet to come out, I was also wondering how long it would be until the pearl is out. I think, on the grounds of the Pearl 2 VS. The iPhone, that the iPhone is more all-around average, but more focused on multimedia and having as many features as possible, not worrying about complete performance, and the Pearl 2 seems like it is in a bit of a different category, more of a multifunction device, it is more focused on function performance/performance enhancing features, and it still has amazing features.

I believe that the GPS will be built in, just like the 8800. As for Sirf III/III+, I believe it will be Sirf III.

JHH483 - Since the posts and talk about the Pearl 2 is only rumor and speculation, I’d buy the Pearl now.
Not sure, but you could be waiting a long time for the Pearl 2 to come out. I don’t think anyone knows when it will be available, could be in four months or maybe in a year.
Anyone who says a date specific is just talking big and does not know what they are talking about. In other words they are just yanking our chains. Having a little fun, dicks that they are.

Wow…I can’t wait to get my hands on this! I wish there were more details as to who which wireless carrier will feature it, but it might be T-Mobile again (I HOPE!), unlike dreadful AT&T. I really hope this comes out very soon! I NEED THIS! (FORGET THE IPHONE!)

The 8100 is a great phone the only drawback is the 3G network at@t is setting up has been screwing up the blackberry service so bad that I had to shut it down and switch to something until they get everything fixed.I will get the BB2 in a heartbeat when the provider gets there sh-t together. I had the I-phone for one day and returned it nothing revolutionary about it except the price.

When is this phone going to be released? Any ideas or rumours?

I have read that this phone is supposed to be 8mm thinner than its predecessor??? Am I supposed to believe that it will be 6.5mm thick??? Please clarify this for me, BG. If that rumor is true, then forget about this being the best phone I have ever seen - this will be the most amazing thing I have seen in my life overall. I hate every Blackberry that has come out since the 8100 - refuse to buy a Curve to “hold me over.” Guess I am tired of being held over by Blackberry et al…do the Komet once and do it right - make it cool to actually want your phone for more than a week.
