BlackBerry Pearl 2 “Komet” reveals itself

I guess we shouldn’t expect a review unit from RIM, right? The BlackBerry Pearl 2 or "Komet" (internal codename) has secretly whispered some fantastic specs and features in our ear today. Some earth-shattering BlackBerry Pearl 2 new features revealed? We could start off with the external MicroSD card slot, or the stereo Bluetooth, but that’s not that interesting to most. The really interesting, and juicy details, start now! The BlackBerry Pearl 2,or Komet, or 8110, or 8120, or 8130 will feature a 3.2 megapixel camera. The difference with this camera, as reported to us, is that it will be used horizontally. Just like other high end camera phones. The colors we reported here first were pretty much spot on; metallic red, blue, gold, and black. In addition to the new camera, the P2 will include Windows Media DRM & MTP support. Also look for motion lock, and a built-in 3.5 mm headset jack just like the BlackBerry Curve. For all you freaks out there who love to hear yourself speak, the Voice Notes application has been enhanced and given a complete makeover; it will be housed as a component within the "Media" application (now up to five multimedia applications) and allow you to save all of your recordings and play them back upon command from your new collection of self-therapy sessions. Oh yeah, RIM is planning a mega huge marketing initiative to launch the Pearl 2. We have a fantastic rundown of the features and specs so make sure you check them out, after the break!

Yeah, TMobile service is the worst…that’s why they consistently win the best service awards every year. Yeah, sure, poor customer service…

Gabe never said anything about Customer Service, just service. Which I’m guessing he means cell service, which T-Mobile’s smaller footprint is pretty much a fact.

My friend just ordered a Pearl. They offered her GPS but she passed on it. Does the Pearl now come with GPS or was the T-Mo dealer mistaken? I asked my friend if she was sure he was referring to the Pearl and she said it was. Maybe they were talking about the data plan and not GPS. But she did specifically say “GPS.” I dunno.

My point is, that if the 8120 coming out in September will have GPS, why would they leave it out of the Komet?

And as to T-Mo customer service, they are the best. I have all the carriers, their support and custo service is the best, hands down.

A metallic gold Pearl? That would be novel, but in about a day I’d feel like a pimp.

Guess the gold model is for the low riders, Beverly Hills bling crowd, and well…. pimps and Paris Hilton.

This looks like a winner. I just wish they could start improving the ruggedness and battery life of the devices again.

BG, I don’t know if you will read this but I’m sure TJ will agree with me. You should really think about us BGR lovers being able to make accounts with passwords so we don’t have to worry about people using our names to write stupid stuff. Maybe a free email forwarding @ bgr.com. I would definately donate!

@eJay while I have yet to have a bad experience I do think you are right, but for what has happended you will need more control over emails and user name verification. But what is stopping someone from using a similar user id? Things can be done it will just need to be given time.

The problem is, people can use a screen name that belongs to someone else and people will think its that person. I think BG should do what Engadget does when someone comments. An email gets sent asking you to confirm that comment. Plus, on here, when someone comments, BG requires an email address which is good.

CN - How do you know the Komet will have GPS? I agree that logic seems to say it will, but do you have anything concrete.

Also, on my poorly written post on carrier customer service, I did not make it clear, I IMHO T-Mo custo service is the best. Sprint and ATT [at the time I had those] sucked big time. Rude, unprofessional, uncaring…

Also, anyone have an opinion on when the Pearl 2 will be coming our? I figure that it won’t be until mid or late 2008. I am guessing this based on the 8120 coming out in Sept. 2007. But then again, the 8120 could just be an interim product to tide everyone over until the Komet debuts. In which case maybe the Komet would come out for the holiday shopping season.

I would definitely buy the Pearl 2. That’s a hot phone compared to my original Pearl that I bought on Sept 12, 2006.

Cool thing is that if T-Mo gets it is that they let us upgrade every 11 months on a phone, at the upgrade price. So I will be able to do that. Woot.

Depressing thing is thinking if some other carrier gets the phone first. What a drag. I don’t want to have to go the unlocked route.

Lastly, anyone know how solid this info is, on the Komet. I hope this isn’t speculation or wishful thinking on what people think the phone should have.

Oh, and not to whine about features because I hate pantywaists doing that, but I have a dispensation to whine this one time. I would like to have seen a video recorder on the Komet. I don’t want to miss capturing the next hanging.

Josh, the iPhone has been talked about quite a bit since January. IMHO I don’t think any of the carriers or phone manufacturers are worried about the iPhone, this includes RIM and carriers who feature the Pearl or other BlackBerries.

Not only has the phone been criticized as a device, but many believe that it is simply too expensive a phone to cause the masses to snap it up.

In the past, and even today, I have been one to snap up the latest and greatest of any electronic device. E.g. I used to pay $500+ for Motorola StarTac phones, whose only feature was it being the smallest cell phone of the time.

I have compared the iPhone with what else is out there and I don’t see it doing all that well in the market.

And as far as my Pearl, I think it easily trumps the iPhone in terms of what I need and like in a smartphone. So if I can be used as a barometer of those whom might consider the iPhone versus the Pearl, the iPhone won’t get in the way of other phone models.

Yes, there is lots of hoopla over it because when Steve makes noise, the media pays attention. But I don’t think that will translate into big sales. Even Steve admits that in the billion cell phones sold each year, he is looking to sell only 10 million.

I could be wrong, but let’s see what happens in the next few months. Already since the iPhone was introduced in January, Apple has listened to criticisms and made changes. E.g., the battery is now supposed to have a longer talk and standby time [this to address the fact the battery cannot be removed]. And to address the fact that people are going to have to constantly be wiping the phone display to clean off makeup, face oils and fingerprints, the display will now be made of glass instead of plastic.

Bottom line: I still want the Pearl 2 over the iPhone.

I hope it comes to TMO with GPS. If so I will buy it outright and swap sims and have the Pearl 1 as a back up. PLEASE have GPS…I’m hoping they just left that tidbit out on accident in the specs.

It’s funny watching all the stupid CDMA customers beg for phones. So pathetic, maybe you should get a real provider. Anyways, as long as Blackberrys use the Blackberry OS, I won’t be picking one up. Especially not this phone with sh*tty suretype.

A real provider will provide great service and coverage in all markets in the US. Today there is not ONE service provider that gives great coverage in all markets in the US. As you can see in the post all providers have their issues in various markets. If you know of one please let us all know. They will become the one and only cell service provider.

@michael - Yes he only wants to sell 10 million a year lets say the average is about $500 and thats low balling it:

    10,000,000 x $500 = $5,000,000,000

So thats $5 BILLION dollars. Not bad for a phone is it? Ill take $5 billion over nothing ANY DAY! ;)

JJLO, in regards to Martin’s rude, shallow, snobby and condescending post, I note that he did not ID his provider, which one would presume, in his opinion, is the only “real provider.”

And IMHO, having used SureType for years, people who criticize it, or as in Martin’s words, declare it a “sh*tty” program, well, they are just too stupid to understand the concept and don’t know how to use it.

Martin is obviously not a businessman. How else to explain not appreciating the fact that a BlackBerry is a business oriented device, not a flashy gadget, like the iPhone.

While the Pearl and Pearl 2 are RIM’s venture into the consumer market, I think they intend to stay within the BB/RIM’s roots, which is a business-oriented operating system that will always remain simple and efficient. I don’t ever see them installing on the Pearl a Windows Mobile type OS.

eJay, you are correct. Those are impressive numbers. And assuming $2.5 to $3 billion goes to Apple, the Company will profit, for sure.

I am only addressing people whom have opined that the iPhone is going to kill off the competition or send manufacturers “back to the drawing board” [as some people have commented]. For these comments to be proven true, Apple would have to make a serious dent in those 1 billion phones sold annually. I just don’t see it.

Actually, my money is on Apple not even selling 10 million units. I just don’t see where there are that many Apple fanatics out there to reach that number.

As to the remaining consumer market, I don’t see there being enough willing to pay $500 for a “fad, must have” phone. And I don’t see the business community buying one, for obvious reasons.

Guess we will see though. It’s interesting to watch, just like it was to see how the Pearl would do [as RIM's first venture into the consumer market].
