RIM confirms device issue with TELUS 8830; Shipment and launch delayed

TELUS and Bell Canada subscribing BlackBerry addicts might be in a for a bit of disappointment here. The BlackBerry 8830 World Phone was supposed to be formally announced yesterday, with a projected ship date of June 22nd. Due to "unknown issues," however, the device launch and ship date have been pushed back indefinitely. While we don’t know exactly why RIM has recalled the device, we do that it is a RIM issue, not a carrier problem, and that all devices have been recalled pending a fix. TELUS is still hoping for a launch announcement by the end of June, but given the ambiguity and scope of the issue(s), we have our doubts that they will be able to pull that off. Is it just us, or is RIM having more than its fair share of issues with the BlackBerry 8830? First Verizon, then Sprint, now this? I guess it wasn’t as easy as Mike said, to "port GSM models over to CDMA". Come on, guys!

Thanks, Trever!

I will tell you this…if Sprint misses the new July date…people are out the door. They would have been much smarter doing the curve vs the 8830. This is so lame.

I think they should have held the Verizon 8830 also. I know multiple people including myself who are experiencing problems. Even though the problems are minor annoyances I have come to expect more from Rim

My issues are the 8830 device switch seems to have erased my browser(got it back). But ever since my 1XEV in the corner qwill switch to 1xev and when it does this it will not access the web. It also drops my blackberry.net and message folder and they do not show back up until it goes back to 1XEV and I know it is not area I am in because I can set the phone on my table and it will do it every hour for about 30 minutes with full signal. I also have my keystrokes set to on and they will make tone every now and then. Video clips correctly configured for bb play on my friends 8830 fine but my sacreen stays black, occasionally static, while audio is fine. These are just a few of my issues

The issue is not software related, rather production related.

I realized it was a phone issue after speaking with a rim rep. I am not worried due to the fact I have already spoken with a manager at my local verizon store who said he would switch it out. Now if this was anywhere else I would be skeptical but the staff at my local store always help and try to make the customer happy. Thay have always done what they said and they are excellent to work with. I have been with verizon 5 years and have 4 lines all because of the staff at my local store. Thay have never lied or tried to pass the buck. If it is a product or billing problem which was their screw up they always admit and fix ($4700.00 phone bill on first treo) fixed immediately on first visit with 1 call to supervisor and customer service. Need I say more.

It must be a problem of product. I picked up my 8830 an hour into the release on the 29th. As for Patrick W’s first comment, I have not had these problems.

The only thing that I can think of happening after gettn it was that when I went into profiles, it was almost as if someone had taken all but 3 of my ringtones, and replaced the rest with a hissing silence. I was told by VZW, to call *228. From what I’ve gathered, by pressing 1 = a software update. Pressing 2 updates roaming capes and coverage areas.

Since I did this, the little things I had a problem with, completly disappeard. All ringtones came back, and lil probs with the browser were no more.

    And as for Pat W’s 2nd comment…..

I switched from going to an electronics chain store, and took a chance with a strate up VZW dealer. They were willing to do much more than the other store I was going to.

Just an FYI, that Telus gave everyone a BB8830 at their event in Vancouver this morning. Basically identical (externally) to the 8800, it is branded as both a Telus and World Edition device.

Unfortunately no luck getting it to work with a generic SIM card so far. You need to activate BOTH the Telus side and a GSM SIM to get GSM to work.

I have a problem w/ the 8830 as follows: if I try to make a phone call while sombody calls in the phone will freeze, and I won’t be able to make phone calls till I restart my device, which takes about 5 mins. Does anybody else have this issue ? and does anyone know if RIM has a patch for this ?

I’ve also had this problem with the freezing as well as the calendar sometimes fails to alert for an appointment. This is now my 3rd BB8830 with Verizon. I really hope they fix these issues soon because I’m tired of trading it in.

I too am on my 3rd 8830 from Telus and it freezes up on occassion when I try to make a call. If I get an incoming call it unfreezes and if I take out the battery it too fixes the problem. Does anyone have a fix for this?

this is my third blackberry 8830 and I am having the same problem (it freezing when I am trying to make a call) this is the second or third time it has happened. I then shut the phone off as it will not place any calls and to my shagrin, the phone seizes in the bell screen. It won’t start back up until I remove the battery to restart it again. I am getting fed up with taking it back. Any suggestions?

There are 3 methods to resolve (temporarily) the freezing issues for outgoing calls on the 8830.

    1) Dial 112 (send) this will reset the tokens in the device and put the phone in emergency mode. Then dial another number as normal and say yes to exit from emergency mode. The phone will operate normally. This is the FASTEST method.

2)Perform a hard reset by pushing alt, right shift key and delete.

    3) Remove and reinstall the battery.

    I hope this helps.

My blackberry 8830 freezes frequently when trying to make a call. This is my second 8830 and it’s doing the same thing. If I try to power down, it won’t. Removing the battery is the only way to fix it. It’s very annoying.

I am on my second 8830, going on to my third. My first BB was freezing, not allowing me to make out going calls, access my browser, send text messages, and e-mails. The only way to get my BB to work was to power it off, which then I would get the blue Bell screen. From there I would have to take the battery out. My second BB does the exact same thing, but it also now powers it self off, the top red light goes on and the only way to fix this is to take the battery out.
I am going on to my 3rd BB this week; hopefully there won’t be any problems with this phone.
You would think that a phone so expensive would work properly or there would be a recall to fix the problem.

I have an 8830 (Verizon) as well, I also used to have issues, then RIM came out with a software update which you can only download from your provider’s site, and now I’m good, another thing you may want to consider is backing up your device & wiping your handheld (including 3rd party apps., as one of them maybe causing your phone to restart) and restore.

P.S. A quicker way to restart rather then taking out your battery, you can hold the alt key, right shift key & del. All simoltaniously.
    Good Luck!
Let me know if it works, or if you have any other questions.

Having the same problems all of you have listed (telus network). Just replaced it with a “refurb” unit today…..already having the problem with the dialing out. I found that if you go to your connections icon and “turn all connections off” then back on it should work.

I am on my fifth 8830 since I first got it in mid October. There is a constant problem with the phone saying calling and not connecting the call. This has been the case for every single phone and occurs multiple times a day (20 -30) and lasts for an average of 10 minutes regardless of the coverage. The longest this problem has lasted is over 12 hours. I have had to pull over, pull money out of an atm, get change and make calls to clients on a payphone which is much more impractical than it sounds, I promise. Also I have a problem where the phone continues to go into 1xev, 1x, 1, and nothing at all, just antenna. So far I have done multiple reconstructions for the voice and data, changed msid numbers 3 times and done other countless changes with 3 different engineers from sprint. I am now convinced they are using me a guinea pig to see just how incompetent their technicians truly are. I truly believe this is a phone issue and not a network issue as I have had blackberrys in the past.

I’ll try the “software update” someone mentioned on Nov 17, 2007. However, after trail and error I figured out whenever my phone freezes in calling mode, I send a one letter text to a close friend which unfreezes the phone. Anyone who knows you’re having this problem will due. Just send a “T” for testing. It works ever time for me and even for my buuddy who went out and bought the same damned phone even when I told about my problems with the initial and the replacement 8830. That’s much easier than taking out the battery. Hopefully, the software update the guy mentioned will alleviate having to send a text. -Nick

unfortunately on my phone texting does not cure it. as a matter of fact that and email are my only two ways of communicating with the outside world when this problem happens. taking the battery out works most of the time but not all, maby 80%.
I spoke with sprint, they are sending me a 8703e to play with and see if i have the same problems. i will post found problems as soon as i receive phone
