Apple iPhone launch deets

Have you been sitting at home alone, trying to figure out what the heck is going to happen June 29th? Should you camp out in the store and then hijack the FedEx delivery guy? Probably not. But we do have some exciting bits of information surrounding the day the iPhone will be released. All AT&T stores will be closing at around 4:30PM on the 29th. Everybody will be kicked out of the store, which will then reopen at 6PM for the sale of the Apple iPhone. In addition to closing at 4:30PM, AT&T stores will be staying open late. We’ve heard up until 12AM. So now you know your attack plan, but what exactly are they doing when they rush us out the door at 4:30PM? Well, they’re expecting the iPhone shipments to hit stores around 4-6PM that day. Make no mistake about it, this was Apple’s genius shipping plan, to make sure devices were not sold early before the release date. Remember the Apple iPhone display from a little while back? That will also be setup in the 4:30PM-6:00PM time frame. Ok, we know when it’s coming, how late the stores are open till, but what else? Well, besides the iPhone, expect a number of accessories to be available at launch. Some of these should include a car charger, extra wall charger, carrying case, and possibly even Apple’s Bluetooth headset. Good luck.

Since it won’t be a morning launch I will swing by around 7AM and see if anyone camped out. If I see even a few people I get in line right then; if nobody is there then I’ll plan on a noon arrival.

I’d be bummed if when I show up at 7AM there are a mass of campers. Not only would it mean waiting the full 11 hours, but I’d have to face the reality that other people were more dedicated than me!

It will use 10x more data because for the first time we will actually be using our phones and not just trying to figure out how to use it.

Don’t get too excited. The stores are getting ready as described. But they’re only going to have 4 or 5 iPhones each! They’re too afraid of theft among other things. So instead they’re going to piss off thousands of potential customers. Mark my word.

@InsiderBob, analysts are saying that if Apple sells only 100,000 iPhones this weekend, the launch will be considered a failure. There are only about about 160 Apple stores in the U.S., and less than 1900 AT&T-owned stores, and not all of the latter are going to be carrying the iPhone. If what you’re saying about 4-5 phones per store is true, they’ll only sell about 10,000 of them; there’s no way they’d allow that to happen.

What’s pissing me off is the fact that a lot of the AT&T stores and employees apparently do have iPhone wait lists even though they aren’t supposed to. Not that it’s a surprise, it’s just annoying, and it’ll suck for anyone who “played fair” and camped out.
