Nokia to make a bid for RIM?

File this one under rumors for the time being, but a rather reputable electronics industry mag seems to think that Nokia might be gearing up to make a bid for RIM. The statement was mentioned in passing, with the exact quote reading: "There were other rumors last week. Oracle was rumored to make a bid for SAP, Nokia would make a bid to buy Research in Motion, and Tokyo Electron Ltd. (TEL) would buy Lam Research Corp., according to SG Cowen Securities Inc. (New York)." As far as we can tell, this is pretty much coming out of the blue, so we have reason to doubt its legitimacy. That being said, the source has a long history of accurate reporting, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Stay tuned for more information if it materializes. In the mean time, what are your thoughts on a potential merger between the Finnish juggernaut and the Canadian underdog?

I hope that Nokia doesn’t buy RIM. I’m happy with my blackberries the way that they are.

Nokia makes great hardware, however, I would not like to see Symbian on my berry. Another vote for no.

Yea, I think Nokia would screw up a good thing. Nokia hasn’t shown a real understanding of business markets the way that RIM has. Let’s hope this is just a rumor.

Would be fantastic for Nokia to swallow an enterprise competitor.

Horrible for RIM because Nokia would no doubt push Symbian onto BlackBerrys and ruin the entire backbone of the company.

I love my BB too much. Don’t let it happen!

    Guys/Gals,

On a serious note, you have to think - even if Nokia makes an offer, what makes you think that RIM will say, “Ok, let’s merge!” NOT! With the way things are going for RIM and new phones on the horizon, I highly doubt that RIM will even consider the merge.

Nokia does need help with their phone design because they a$$ ugly to begin with. I’ve never liked them but than again, I’ve never liked any other phone since I got addicted to Blackberry’s. On that note:

    I love the Curve!!!

I think someone is just trying to stir up the pot, so to speak. What are these people smoking? Why would RIM even entertain such a ridiculous notion.

They sure don’t need Nokia or any other competitor for that matter!! RIM is doing just fine, thank-you.

this is bogus. rim curve shows that they plan to push blackberry brand into the consumer space themselves, not sell out a week after putting millions into the first big effort to do so.

and i also agree with board sentiment. nokia would ruin blackberry completely.
