Apple iPhone details a plenty
Now that we all know when the iPhone is dropping, some further rumors about Apple’s upcoming wireless Coup de’Tat are in order. Here’s a short rundown for your viewing pleasure:
1. The iPhone will interact with your Mac through iPhoto and iTunes, but will not appear on your desktop as a removable drive.
2. There will not be an external SIM slot, contrary to the announcement at MacWorld stating that the phone would have a SIM slot at the top of the device.
3. The battery will be next to impossible to remove, as there are no external latches, release buttons, or clips (but you already knew that, didn’t you?).
4. An iChat program will not be included in the initial operating system. Coupled with the lack of support for 3rd party apps for the time being, this means that there will be no way to get your instant messaging fix for now.
5. Safari for iPhone features tabbed browsing, making it an even more appealing alternative to the Pocket IE world.
6. There is a VPN client currently in beta that may or may not be included in the initial release.
7. The screen is surprisingly resistant to smudges and blemishes.
Keep in mind that all of this is subject to change, augmentation, and alteration as the release date approaches. That being said, the glaring possible omission of IM support at launch could turn out to be a deal breaker for some. Tsk tsk, Apple.

I really don;t care for the iPhone. Not cause im an Apple hater, i love my macbook and my ipod. It’s just that technology companies nowadays are putting too many bells and whistles into their products. Why would i want to watch a movie on a tiny ass screen? I tried putting video on my ipod once and my battery was practically dead after watching one episode of The Office. If i have a cell phone, let it be a cell phone!! If i buy a digital music player, it’s because i want it to play music, not take my trash out! Let the gadgets do what they were intended to do. You don’t see LeBron James trying to play hockey do you??

lack of iChat is really bad news. how credible is 9to5mac? maybe instead of saying it will not be included, you should let everyone know it’s not included in the iPhones that a handful of people have right now but nothing was said of iPhones to be released June 29th.
I think it would be absurd for Apple to not include iChat and that it will come with the phone later on this month. I don’t think Steve would demo anything for the phone that he wouldn’t include.
Doesn’t make sense.

If the Iphone doesnt have a sim slot how would you intall the card? Will there be a removable panel where it will go? It’s my understanding a GSM phone has to have a SIM card to opperate.

@JP
I’m assuming that the sim card would be built into the device itself. This make sense as to how AT&T would be the sole provider of the iPhone. Who cares if you can unlock the iPhone when you aren’t able to swap out the sim card for a different carrier. This in my mind is a big deal break for buying it. I go through 2 to 3 different phones a month just to try out new ones. That’s what’s great about GSM service. Just swap out the sim.

The issue isnt being able to buy the phone cause I believe most people will be willing to buy the phone but where everyone is going to get screwed is trying to afford the phone. What I mean is that I have the Curve and a friend of mine at AT&T told me that the iphone data plan was going to be $10 more expensive then the most expensive blackberry plan which means its going to be around $50 a month for a data plan alone. Then you have the battery issue, I’ve noticed a substantial drop off in battery life in my 30gb ipod so whats going to happen to people that are locked into a 2 year contract with a iphone? There phones wont even make it to 2 years and they will have to replace it on there own since I’m sure that AT&T isnt going to insure it since the wont even insure the Curve, and then there is another $600 at least since you’ll have to pay retail.

JP: yes, GSM phones need a SIM card to operate. Apple could have put it where most cellphone manufacturers put the SIM card, under the battery; if the battery isn’t user-removable, you can’t change your SIM, so you simply can’t put your SIM card on the phone, you’ll provably have to ask at&t to exchange your SIM for use in the iPhone.

ichat im sure will be coming asap, they know thats a big problem and they have already stated that they will be rolling out new programs and features free of charge after the release. Not sure about the sim situation, maybe they install the cards at the factory? Anyways as for Eddie’s comment about battery life, I just got back form a trip and watched an over 2 hour movie (Last King of Scotland) and listened to a 1 Hour Kevin smith podcast and still had battery when I landed so not sure what your ipod’s problem is.

Apple makes me worry about the iPhone too much. Someone above made a good point. As far as watching the video on the iPod it would prolly drain the battery immensely. Wasnt there a article on here or engadgetmobile or something saying that The Steve went through 3 different iPhones at his keynote address? The battery issue might kill the iPhone for me. Also the release of the Curve because I REALLY REALLY love my Curve. How about any other Curve owners? Will you be getting rid of your Curve for a iPhone?

We will all know the answers the closer we get to June 29th. Will the phone live up to the hype?

I’ve been a BlackBerry user for years and at first I was on the bandwagon to get the iphone when it was released but with the new 88xx models and the new curve, I don’t think ill even consider getting the iphone. If rather pay retail for an 88xx.

I also love my BlackBerries. Mainly for the fail safe e-mail client. As long as the Iphone will have reliable POP mail service I will try one.
Does anyone know if you will be able to use the keyboard in “landscape” mode? I think all the displays and commercials only show that feature in standard vertical mode. I think that would make it much easier to type on.

Great. The battery isn’t removable.. Now what do I tell the customers who are having problems? Lol.. Usually a power cycle fixes everything.

It’s “coup d’état”.

Wait till the iPhone nano is launched in about 90 days then get the iPhone.

Why did anyone expect iChat? No one ever suggested iChat would be on iPhone.
Instant messaging would be a major battery drainer. It may end up on iPhone eventually, but it’s definitely no deal breaker for me. How many phones actually have an instant messaging client?
The SMS program on iPhone behaves a lot like a mix between iChat and email, anyway. Sure, you have to pay for text messages, but I doubt Cingular will allow iPhone users to not have an unlimited data plan with at least 2000 messages a month, anyway.

i think most all pda’s have a messaging client, usually 3rd party though. Iphone nano in 90 days? come on.
not all devices need power cycling, it seems blackberry and windows mobile are the ones thanned it the most, but it depends on the OS running them.
they have talked about the landscape keyboard but everyone thinks that will come much later if it does happen as it changes alot of aspect issues in the programs.
Imyself have a 8800 and love it but they are very different devices, the blackberry is the best at email hands down, but it can struggle as an internet device.
The iphone I think will be the opposite, it will do very well with internet (tabbed browsing) but will not be as good with email (no push other than yahoo).
as for battery life, I’m willing to bet it will be not worse than some of than some of the new treos out there.

When you say “push” only for yahoo. It will still be able to POP other accounts like gmail for instance..correct? I assume there may be a small delay.

did you just say “Prolly”?

It is offensive the battery can’t be user replaced in the first place but it becomes a big issue because even if battery life is equal to that of a typical smartphone the thing about those is that you can carry a BU battery.

I think Apple is about to learn the hard way. Engadget posted something interesting, let me post it:
“The iPhone’s on pretty much the most massive pedestal that any gadget has ever been on, and if there are any issues with it — like with its touchscreen, battery life, call quality, or software stability — you can expect the backlash to be severe.”
Phone companies know that a. battery life is always a problem and b. that most people enjoy the ability to have the phone unlocked for change between carriers or overseas (etc).
I believe that even though Apple will be able to sell this like water in Africa, it will become a huge, massive problem in the long run as the battery and GSM Sim card change becomes an issue.
I will probably be selling my stock on Apple a week after its release.

Who’s number is that? Can I call them?

If the iPhone requires a computer to operate and update. This is going to severly limit it’s widespread use.
At least with a large capacity iPod, once it’s filled with your complete music selections you can keep using it, give them away to computer illerate types etc.

I just do not know what this big deal is with the battery. People, open your eyes. They already have plug in external battery rechargers that use the USB slot, just like plugging into a Mac. !!!
I have an iPod and you can get a AC adapter that recharges it, and a car charger, etc. They make a recharger that uses 4 AA batteries. So, lets take a break on the battery issue, OK??

No SIM access! Apple is nuts. And so is Cingular.
So your on vacation or in Europe and your nice iPhone breaks. A user can’t quickly buy a phone and slide his SIM in? What is the proposal then? Your phone breaks in Europe and you can’t get your SIM out, what do you do? No phone numbers. Not MacBook to get numbers.
No SIM access means this phone is not going to sell well overall. Sick
