John Mayer loves BlackBerry, RIM loves John Mayer

Is RIM really in need of street cred’ so badly as to stoop to this level? The answer would appear to be yes. Reuters is reporting that the Canadian handset manufacturer is sponsoring Mr. John Mayer’s upcoming North American Summer tour. The tour catalog shall include hits such as "Your Berry is a Wonderland" and "My Stupid Pearl". All jokes aside, this is a revolutionary marketing move considering RIM’s traditional ad campaigns that target boring people doing boring things. The impending release of the BlackBerry Curve certainly has the company trying some new things. RIM, as well as AT&T, will have significant presence at Mayer’s upcoming shows. They’re installing kiosks that allow concertgoers to experience the BlackBerry Curve, BlackBerry Pearl, and other handsets. While it’s not clear whether these kiosks will give people the opportunity to sign up for service, it seems like a logical assumption. Way to get all hip, RIM. We’re behind you 100%. Next time just please pick someone better. I heard Kanye was interested…

c’mon BG..gonna have to disagree with you on that one. Mayer is quite the musician..and tech geek believe it or not. he’s really not known as that “body is a wonderland” dude anymore…he can shred. btw, black people love jm, kanye has done a few songs with him, just blaze did a whole jam session with him at alife in nyc, and common has him on his last album…so he’s about as street cred as you get with a white dude lol. though if they really really wanted some street cred, they should have sponsored the wu-tang clan.

I agree with Denver. This was a great tour to sponsor. It will allow them to market to a couple diff demos at the concerts.
Well done. RIM.

First off, I did not write that post. Second, there are different ways to view it…not taking anything away from John Mayer, but of all the people in the world you could have sponsored would it have been him?

didn’t john mayer play at the steve jobs keynote address a few months back? is RIM “stealing” john mayer from apple?
hahahahaha, great move.

BG,
Probably would have….the guy is a real musician, touted as the next clapton all the time…was up for album of the year, and playing to 20,000 people a night in the age bracket they are trying to target is not a bad move..btw BG, have you got even a drop of new info if this sucker might get to the public this week?

Exactly Sam - This is a good move, and a slap to the boys in Cupertino. I am surprised the BG didn’t pick up on that. Kanye? r u kidding me?

Mayer? That’s sad…I know Rim could do better. I do not understand why rim feels as if they can’t have a presence on the celebrity marketplace, it’s clear that most every celeb uses a blackberry, just look in us weekly! Rim would do s much better if they had better marketing strategies. O well, I suppose mayer is better than nothing. Maybe rim will team up with jess too! Haha.

If Mayer isn’t “The Next Clapton” by now, he isn’t going to be. Clapton was “Clapton” by the time he was 19.
But if Mayer diggs gadgets, why not pick him? At least it’s genuine.
