HTC Kaiser Unboxing

Remember the exciting news from last evening? Here it is! As you can imagine, we’ve seen our share of devices here at BGR, and I personally have combed through almost all. Let’s start it off like this…the HTC Kaiser is the best darn Pocket PC I have ever used! It really has everything you have come to expect nowadays. For instance, it’s a full Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 6 Professional, which we prefer over the smartphone bastard child. Detailed internal specs include quad-band EDGE, tri-band UMTS/HSDPA, a 3 megapixel autofocus camera, integrated GPS, WiFI, Bluetooth, a full QWERTY ‘board, and a unique option that lets you tilt the screen to have it sit on your desk perfectly aimed at you. The Kaiser comes in a little thinner than the HTC TyTN, and a tad bit thicker than the HTC P4350, which at the end of the day doesn’t make that much of a difference. The only possible downside at all I could find is that the HTC Kaiser could shave a few ounces off its weight. Nothing to get excited over though! Build quality is fantastic, and the GPS works extremely well. In addition, the 3 megapixel shooter takes wonderful photographs. The general public (sorry guys) should expect the full commercial release around October of this year. I am so going to be the cool kid on the block for a good couple months. Because I’m so in love with this device, we’ll get a little more detailed in this mini-review and walk through, check the rest of the HTC Kaiser’s highlights after the jump, or if you prefer skip right to the full unboxing gallery below! In addition, we give the HTC Kasier, our most coveted 5 BG award.

UPDATE: Who is up for some good news? After talking with my source again regarding the HTC Kaiser, I questioned him in detail about the release. He got an update from HTC saying that this will actually ship in late July, not October! The HTC Shift should be out in October. Take this as you will, but it’s lookin’ better and better for everyone by the minute!

Click on over to see the hotness that is the HTC Kaiser, unboxed of course!

Something we can be appreciative of, is the Kaiser’s RAM, 128MB of it. 75MB are usable to the user for programs. Incredible! We also have 256MB of ROM as well built right in. HTC has integrated an application called Hubdog which I believe should work on various Pocket PCs. This is a RSS feed reader, podcast downloader, and even a mini blog publishing tool built right in! Right now it looks like it only supports Blogger at the moment, but hopefully that will change. As you’ll see from the shots in the unboxing gallery, the HTC Kaiser has a little raised part on the battery cover which says GPS. Not only does this help keep your device from directly touching the surface you rest it on, it also provides just enough space in between the surface and the speaker, to let some of those music waveforms really shine. How is the speaker you ask? Extremely loud and crisp! On screen the device has a constant "H" by the network status bar indicating that HSDPA is in full effect! If you’re not the daring type, HTC even gives you the option under settings to turn HSDPA off. Something featured on the HTC TyTN, that did not make it onto the HTC P4350 has reappeared on the Kaiser, and that is a scroll wheel. It is smaller and a little more refined than the TyTN’s and does an excellent job at navigating. I really can’t express how this phone has surprised me in more ways than one. If I find some other tasty tidbits, you best believe I’ll update this post!

The 3G should be your clue that its going to drop on AT&T, unless I am wrong about T Mobile not launching their 3G service anytime soon since they are on the UMA push

Sounds Great, Does the 256 rom improve the battery life over the 8525? I was looking to upgrade my 8700c to the 8525: when I stumbled upon some kaiser info. I guess I will be waiting until October? OUCH!! I am guessing the price will be around 600$

Totally off topic, but since you seem to ahead of the sites in terms of release dates I’d love to know when Verizon Wireless will release the Treo 755P. Thanks!

    Why October?

For all intensive purposes, this device is expected to launch in the summer. What will happen is that you can buy and HTC Kaiser in June and it will be an unlocked un-subsidized version. What BoyGenius unboxed there, looks like a full retail version. I bet these are in a factory somehwere getting ready to be shipped all over the world. What big conference is there in June? HTC will announce and immediately start selling the 630 and Kaiser in June, and are hoping to feed off/steal some of the iPhone thunder.

AT&T will probably launched in October and branded as an 8725 or something along those lines.

    “For all intensive purposes …”

Oh, for the love of … The phrase is “for all intents and purposes”. I really don’t understand why people keep getting that wrong!

I think the Kaiser is going to be a killer device, but I don’t think any carrier in the US will get it. AT&T is probably going to focus on the iPhone in order to make the most of that relationship with Apple, and if they get the Kaiser at all, it’ll be a bit later. T-Mobile doesn’t have their 3G network up yet, and even when they do, the Kaiser doesn’t support 1700MHz. Really, this phone has everything except for an easy way into the market! Hopefully I’m wrong about AT&T and they’ll realize that the Kaiser could be the marquee Business device while the iPhone can be the Consumer device.

I don’t think I can wait until October. I am thinking about buying it unlocked: can anyone clue me in on the downside to this decision? Do I keep my service and insert my sim card? If cingular is getting this and the iphone that would tie up alot of the end user and buisiness user. Am I the only person with no interest in the Iphone?

    Daniel says:

I highly doubt Cingular will be carrying this anytime soon. Ofcourse the device will be released this year unlocked and/or through other carriers, but to replace their own 8525 within 6 months would be highly unlikely.
Chances are once the device comes out it’ll easily ask for around $800+ unlocked for atleast the first month. Will be worth it though.

Let us know the rest of the specs when you get a chance TBG!! Uses the same processor / and video chip as the TYTN?

I think BGR needs me to take ALL of his pics of future equipment. You lose too much detail. One might think you are using the camera in your phone. So that your readership gets a REAL look, you send me the new devices and I will take professional pics of them. How about it BGR? Hey well I can try can’t I. I still look for the holy grail of phones, and this one lists most everything. Now how is the voice quality? That is where some of these super phones really fall short, I mean they are supposed to be phones first, PDA’s second, Media, third, etc

nice how they god enough RAM in this and all the radios

it’s really idiotic how business, mail and browsing-oriented devices can have such bad screens today.. how the hell can you sell a device with a screen this big and only QVGA resolution?..

CPU data, battery data? c’mon, pls ;)

Very nice BG, so now this seems to be a very useful device and could quite possibly be the end all device for many, until two weeks from now they drop another beauty, that will help push, we hope, the cost of data plans down. Now for the idea that ATT will realease this one, it seems hard although possible since they will need something that will reach into the pockets of the business user. I still have a hard time assuming the iPhone will dominate as much as people expect it to.

I bet this thing makes it out on AT&T around November-December, which would give the 8525 a full 12 months on the market.

I’ve just got to ask this question…is it SDHC compliant? I can see ditching my Zen to truly have one device to rule them all. If so, October is a LONG way off and I don’t think I can make it. BTW, I look forward to a full review to satiate my gadget lust.
