HTC Kaiser Unboxing
Remember the exciting news from last evening? Here it is! As you can imagine, we’ve seen our share of devices here at BGR, and I personally have combed through almost all. Let’s start it off like this…the HTC Kaiser is the best darn Pocket PC I have ever used! It really has everything you have come to expect nowadays. For instance, it’s a full Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 6 Professional, which we prefer over the smartphone bastard child. Detailed internal specs include quad-band EDGE, tri-band UMTS/HSDPA, a 3 megapixel autofocus camera, integrated GPS, WiFI, Bluetooth, a full QWERTY ‘board, and a unique option that lets you tilt the screen to have it sit on your desk perfectly aimed at you. The Kaiser comes in a little thinner than the HTC TyTN, and a tad bit thicker than the HTC P4350, which at the end of the day doesn’t make that much of a difference. The only possible downside at all I could find is that the HTC Kaiser could shave a few ounces off its weight. Nothing to get excited over though! Build quality is fantastic, and the GPS works extremely well. In addition, the 3 megapixel shooter takes wonderful photographs. The general public (sorry guys) should expect the full commercial release around October of this year. I am so going to be the cool kid on the block for a good couple months. Because I’m so in love with this device, we’ll get a little more detailed in this mini-review and walk through, check the rest of the HTC Kaiser’s highlights after the jump, or if you prefer skip right to the full unboxing gallery below! In addition, we give the HTC Kasier, our most coveted 5 BG award.
UPDATE: Who is up for some good news? After talking with my source again regarding the HTC Kaiser, I questioned him in detail about the release. He got an update from HTC saying that this will actually ship in late July, not October! The HTC Shift should be out in October. Take this as you will, but it’s lookin’ better and better for everyone by the minute!
Click on over to see the hotness that is the HTC Kaiser, unboxed of course!
Something we can be appreciative of, is the Kaiser’s RAM, 128MB of it. 75MB are usable to the user for programs. Incredible! We also have 256MB of ROM as well built right in. HTC has integrated an application called Hubdog which I believe should work on various Pocket PCs. This is a RSS feed reader, podcast downloader, and even a mini blog publishing tool built right in! Right now it looks like it only supports Blogger at the moment, but hopefully that will change. As you’ll see from the shots in the unboxing gallery, the HTC Kaiser has a little raised part on the battery cover which says GPS. Not only does this help keep your device from directly touching the surface you rest it on, it also provides just enough space in between the surface and the speaker, to let some of those music waveforms really shine. How is the speaker you ask? Extremely loud and crisp! On screen the device has a constant "H" by the network status bar indicating that HSDPA is in full effect! If you’re not the daring type, HTC even gives you the option under settings to turn HSDPA off. Something featured on the HTC TyTN, that did not make it onto the HTC P4350 has reappeared on the Kaiser, and that is a scroll wheel. It is smaller and a little more refined than the TyTN’s and does an excellent job at navigating. I really can’t express how this phone has surprised me in more ways than one. If I find some other tasty tidbits, you best believe I’ll update this post!

has anyone try comparing the kaiser with the nokia e90?
You can compare it for yourself. Here is a link to a side by side comparison of all 3 versions of teh kaiser (the 100, the 110, and the 120) and the sweet as hell LG KS20 which comes out in november:
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=pdacomparer
Unfortunately, this site has no Nokia phones on it. here is a link to the Nokia site with the E90 specs:

I like the Kaiser 120 the best (the model with both cameras), but I don’t think AT&T will have that model. Just the 110 with the 3MP camera and the 110 without camera. The Kaiser is less bulky than the E90, with very similar specs. Also, I do not know if there will be any discount on the E90 like there will be with teh AT&T versions of the kaiser. That LG KS20 is even sweeter, IMO, because of its size and the lack of QWERTY keyboard which is fine with me. It has a touch screen and a flash for the camera, but the camera is only a 1.9 MP. If the LG was out at the same time or earlier than the Kaiser in the US, I would get it in a heart beat.
This is the best PDA
So does anyone have any solid info about when AT&T will be releasing this freakin phone! I WANT IT!! with the AT&T discount of course!!!
Doesn’t the overseas unlocked HTC Kaiser P4550 phone (That exists now) have all the same software functions (or more) as the AT&T 8925 (Shift) coming out next month? What’s wrong with an unlocked phone?
correction: that’s 8925 “Tilt”.
where is everyone buying there htc tytn ii from??
I’m gonna have to get mine from my network provider (T-Mobile UK) because unfortunately I just can’t afford the HTC OEM version – and it’s a crying shame, because the HTC version looks beautiful and slinky in black, and the T-Mobile one looks like the Vario 1 – grey and bulky and horrible! But oh well, I know it’s the same phone underneath.
I might have to make my own case for it.
does the kaiser have instant messaging such as aim, msn, and/or yahoo? n how is the web browser ??
I am on my third Tilt in two weeks and still can not get any where in connecting to my Corproate email. Support for the Tilt is just not where it should be for a device of this caliber.
Hey, maybe someone needs bidden HTC kaiser for 360$ i won’t buy it because i live in Lithuania and shipping costs a lot.
I was on this website looking for comments on the Tilt. On my second phone in 3.5 weeks. 1st battery drained and crashed. Second crashes & there is no indication phone is down and no record of missed calls. Backlight won’t go off automatically when charging. Email notification no longer takes you to view the email, & other random things. I’m wondering how many other things will stop working after having the phone months vs weeks. Can anyone speak to this?
I have the AT&T version and am using the Holux GPSlim240 with Google maps. To setup the Googlemaps to work with an external GPS just click on Start/Settings/System/External GPS and setup the parameters for your GPS. Then open Google maps and click Menu and Use GPS. That’s it.
I’m sitting in my dining room tracking 5 to 7 satellites.
To: HTC Corporation
To whom it may concern,
The lack of ATI Imageon hardware driver support and the 7200 chipset driver support on the TYTN II is obvious. The TYTN II, which claims to be superior to most all current devices on the market, is lacking serious driver and hardware support when it comes to Video playback. In fact, anything that has to do with Direct Draw, Direct X and any fluid movement of pixels on the screen seems behave in an unacceptably slow manner.
Even the camera application that comes with the device slows down to such a slow frame rate that photos are not able to be captured, and cause videos to record and render slower than a sideshow. Videos captured from a third party source render faster on devices over 3 years older using slower technology.
There are many TYTN II owners experiencing the same exact results that have been briefly explained above. The lack of speed in rendering video or 3D content on the TYTN II seems to be a direct result of poorly coded and even missing driver support. If HTC is unable or unwilling to resolve this issue, please prove a full fledge SDK release so that phone owners can repair what HTC was unwilling or unable to do.
Thank You,
All TytnII/ATT Tilt/T Mobile MDA Vario III owners.
Sincerely,
Ryan Spencer
