HTC Kaiser Unboxing
Remember the exciting news from last evening? Here it is! As you can imagine, we’ve seen our share of devices here at BGR, and I personally have combed through almost all. Let’s start it off like this…the HTC Kaiser is the best darn Pocket PC I have ever used! It really has everything you have come to expect nowadays. For instance, it’s a full Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 6 Professional, which we prefer over the smartphone bastard child. Detailed internal specs include quad-band EDGE, tri-band UMTS/HSDPA, a 3 megapixel autofocus camera, integrated GPS, WiFI, Bluetooth, a full QWERTY ‘board, and a unique option that lets you tilt the screen to have it sit on your desk perfectly aimed at you. The Kaiser comes in a little thinner than the HTC TyTN, and a tad bit thicker than the HTC P4350, which at the end of the day doesn’t make that much of a difference. The only possible downside at all I could find is that the HTC Kaiser could shave a few ounces off its weight. Nothing to get excited over though! Build quality is fantastic, and the GPS works extremely well. In addition, the 3 megapixel shooter takes wonderful photographs. The general public (sorry guys) should expect the full commercial release around October of this year. I am so going to be the cool kid on the block for a good couple months. Because I’m so in love with this device, we’ll get a little more detailed in this mini-review and walk through, check the rest of the HTC Kaiser’s highlights after the jump, or if you prefer skip right to the full unboxing gallery below! In addition, we give the HTC Kasier, our most coveted 5 BG award.
UPDATE: Who is up for some good news? After talking with my source again regarding the HTC Kaiser, I questioned him in detail about the release. He got an update from HTC saying that this will actually ship in late July, not October! The HTC Shift should be out in October. Take this as you will, but it’s lookin’ better and better for everyone by the minute!
Click on over to see the hotness that is the HTC Kaiser, unboxed of course!
Something we can be appreciative of, is the Kaiser’s RAM, 128MB of it. 75MB are usable to the user for programs. Incredible! We also have 256MB of ROM as well built right in. HTC has integrated an application called Hubdog which I believe should work on various Pocket PCs. This is a RSS feed reader, podcast downloader, and even a mini blog publishing tool built right in! Right now it looks like it only supports Blogger at the moment, but hopefully that will change. As you’ll see from the shots in the unboxing gallery, the HTC Kaiser has a little raised part on the battery cover which says GPS. Not only does this help keep your device from directly touching the surface you rest it on, it also provides just enough space in between the surface and the speaker, to let some of those music waveforms really shine. How is the speaker you ask? Extremely loud and crisp! On screen the device has a constant "H" by the network status bar indicating that HSDPA is in full effect! If you’re not the daring type, HTC even gives you the option under settings to turn HSDPA off. Something featured on the HTC TyTN, that did not make it onto the HTC P4350 has reappeared on the Kaiser, and that is a scroll wheel. It is smaller and a little more refined than the TyTN’s and does an excellent job at navigating. I really can’t express how this phone has surprised me in more ways than one. If I find some other tasty tidbits, you best believe I’ll update this post!

Why October?
For all intensive purposes, this device is expected to launch in the summer. What will happen is that you can buy and HTC Kaiser in June and it will be an unlocked un-subsidized version. What BoyGenius unboxed there, looks like a full retail version. I bet these are in a factory somehwere getting ready to be shipped all over the world. What big conference is there in June? HTC will announce and immediately start selling the 630 and Kaiser in June, and are hoping to feed off/steal some of the iPhone thunder.
AT&T will probably launched in October and branded as an 8725 or something along those lines.

Oh, for the love of … The phrase is “for all intents and purposes”. I really don’t understand why people keep getting that wrong!
I think the Kaiser is going to be a killer device, but I don’t think any carrier in the US will get it. AT&T is probably going to focus on the iPhone in order to make the most of that relationship with Apple, and if they get the Kaiser at all, it’ll be a bit later. T-Mobile doesn’t have their 3G network up yet, and even when they do, the Kaiser doesn’t support 1700MHz. Really, this phone has everything except for an easy way into the market! Hopefully I’m wrong about AT&T and they’ll realize that the Kaiser could be the marquee Business device while the iPhone can be the Consumer device.

I highly doubt Cingular will be carrying this anytime soon. Ofcourse the device will be released this year unlocked and/or through other carriers, but to replace their own 8525 within 6 months would be highly unlikely.
Chances are once the device comes out it’ll easily ask for around $800+ unlocked for atleast the first month. Will be worth it though.
Let us know the rest of the specs when you get a chance TBG!! Uses the same processor / and video chip as the TYTN?

Very nice BG, so now this seems to be a very useful device and could quite possibly be the end all device for many, until two weeks from now they drop another beauty, that will help push, we hope, the cost of data plans down. Now for the idea that ATT will realease this one, it seems hard although possible since they will need something that will reach into the pockets of the business user. I still have a hard time assuming the iPhone will dominate as much as people expect it to.

Agreed Dave,
From now on the next thing for these devices is to have VGA output or atleast a dongle to provide VGA output, with the endgoal being that this replace a laptop on the road.
What would really be super sweet. I would carry a Kaiser 2 (with VGA output and extra batteries rather than a laptop.) There is a company that has VGA out, but I can’t see to remember where the review was about their upcoming product.

I don’t see why would anyone want a 2.8″ VGA display. Also, VGA devices seem to require faster CPUs and therefore have higher power consumption, which in my opinion is pretty contradictory to the tendency of using low-power-consuming, all-in-one integrated chips like OMAP or Qualcomm in phone devices. A VGA output would have been nice, though…
Hopefully BG will add some info on the CPU, as Kaiser is the first (and only - yet) device with this particular processor (according to pdadb.net).

I don’t mean to flame or something, but I do own both a VGA and a QVGA device, and I’m convinced that a 3.5″ screen (like that of a loox N560) is pretty much the smallest screen size a VGA may find a reasonable use on. Even if I were wrong, I still think that the advantages of the use of a VGA on a device like the Kaiser simply cannot outweigh the disadvantages.

Yes the camera has flash, and it’ll be just as bad as the ‘flashes’ which have been on the previous HTC models. In many respects it’s almost identical to the Hermes (which I own), and the flash on that is awful.

That might be so, but in September 2006 (when I commenced my current contract with T-Mobile, which I’ve got with a Hermes) I paid just £65 (down from £80) for the actual handset and my 18 month contract is only £20 (though I have a £7.50 a month addon for unlimited data).
That’s hardly expensive at all really, given the handset. I expect to see the Kaiser being sold through TM for a pretty reasonable price soon after it goes on sale OEM - the guy in the shop said they usually get the new handsets a couple of months after they retail OEM, so things are looking up.

I’m interested to know more about the Qualcomm dual core capabilities. There’s mention of 3D processing, but I don’t plan on playing 3D games. So what’s the advantages of 3D acceleration? If the 3D acceleration can help out with GPS mapping (i.e. Memory-Map), then that would be really good. But not sure if I want to give up the extra MHz for the 3D acceleration.

Defenetely you should give up megahertz for 3d acceleration if you plan to use off-road maps with gps.
You also will be able to see movies without any problems and very smooth (but in qvga is like using an f1 in a traffic jam).

I’ve seen some post here about why VGA? Yes VGA would SEEM to be a waste on a small screen so I agree the the front of the phone needs to hve more screen area to accommidate it.
Ok let me spell it out to you.
cad programs
1) Most webpages are setup for 640×480
2) Tech support guys - we have all used our phones (logmein) to control our clients or our computers remotely - qvga requires alot more scrolling
3) if you want to watch movies etc… you have to really compress the size down. With VGA it gets acceptable
4) Reading - you can use a small font and still see it clearly - less eye strain
5) cleaner looking icons
6) Pictures - be able to look at pictures on your phone without having to zoom tons to see details
7) reading documents
9) gps (try seeing street names and enough detail on a qvga)
Yea so if you are happy just having a phone with soem pda stuff then get a Q or something. We all want a laptop replacement for 75% of what we would lug a laptop around. Then we are willing to pay the $600+ bucks that we could be spending toward a laptop.

Then think about the upcoming HTC Polaris (Google it). It has the same spec like HTC Kaiser (minus keyboard), but it has 3.5″ VGA screen!!!!

Without keyboard is ok, you can use stylus or your finger (3.5″ is big enough) + Happy Tapping Keyboard (Google it) !

Quarter VGA 320×240 is not acceptable for comfortable browsing, having only 77K pixels.
77! Even crappy cameras have now 200K, and note, they do not need to reproduce tiny texts!!!!!
iPhone also a bit sucks (it’s only a half-VGA), but as a partial compensation for inconvenience it zooms eazily and does not need any stylus.
Ideal pixel count is widescreen VGA like one N800 has - all 100% happy with it
The screen size has to be 3.2 - 4″, we do not need tons of plastic around it.

Good News is AT&T is currently testing the Kaiser for a late 3rd - 4th quarter release.
Bad news is that they are testing with the front camera removed as well as the GPS chip removed.
To me that was one of the main reasons from upgrading from the 8525. GOD forbid they actually give the customer what they want in a device.

Why is everyone so concerned about who the carrier is? Why not just get it from HTC directly? That way, the GPS chip will be there for sure and there won’t be any ugly carrier graffity on the phone (I had an iPaq that was inscribed with ‘T-Mobile’ and I hated that). I would really like someone to answer this question, as I’m baffled that people would want to buy a phone from a carrier in the first place.

Arco, VGA screen on a device like this is impractical for two reasons:
1) it would KILL the battery life, and the device has enough hardware features already (GPS, wifi, bluetooth, 3G with HSUPA etc), and
2) a device like the Universal or the Advantage suits a VGA screen, but not a handheld phone device. It makes it too big to be a comfortably-handheld device (imho).
I’m fine with a QVGA screen, asking for a VGA screen which would have to stay really small is a bit pointless in the grander scheme of things

Qualcomm — a company that’s arguably more used to suing than being sued — isn’t finding much luck in its protracted quest to avoid a Broadcom-led ban of its 3G hardware from coming into the States. Following a recent denial of its motion to stay the ban in the court system, the President of The United States himself (or his administration, anyway) has swooped in to render an executive judgment, and it ain’t looking any better for Qualcomm. Saying that the importance of protecting IP rights outweighs the inconvenience of the ban, the Bush folks have stood by the ITC’s decision to impose the ban in the first place, making it seem all that much smarter now for Verizon to have sidestepped the whole ordeal and paid Broadcom itself. Barring any last minute antics, the ban gets enforced starting tomorrow.
What do you guys think about this information and how would it affect the release of HTC Kaiser in the States?

Can anybody comment on why HTC put the speaker phone on the back? What is the design/vision here? Imagine putting the phone on the table of your meeting room (or whatever) and having a conference call. Since the microphone is on the opposite side of the speaker phone… either your voice will be muffled, or the speaker’s voice will be muffled. It’s kind of hard to stand up the phone vertically… so, yeah, let me know what you think.

I have to admit a moral bias before I mask it with rational justifications: I hate the idea of buying a phone from a carrier, especially when the carrier refers to the phone as its own (i.e. Imagine the advertisement from At&T “We’ve been hard at work and now we bring you, our favorite consumer, a brand new mobile phone: the AT&T Tilt!! Yeah!”).
Anyway, it cost me $800. However, before you jump to call me a lunatic, consider the following:
Buying from AT&T locks you into a 2-year contract if I am not mistaken. Now multiply $40/month * 24 months. That’s $960. Now consider instead, buying a SkypeIn number (like me), and SkypePro, and unlimited calling (incoming and outgoing) within North America. Voicemail and call display included. Total bill? $7 a month. Since both my home and my university campus have free wireless, this covers me for almost all cases. I’m still considering an unlimited data plan from a carrier (the Chicago area has 3G nearly everywhere), which would mean that I could receive and make calls virtually everywhere through Skype via the Kaiser. I’m waiting on that latter idea though to see if I really need it.
All that being said, setting up SkypeMobile is a bit of headache. It’ll be really easy someday soon, just not today. The whole thing reminds me of Linux vs. Windows. Of course going open-source is much much cheaper, but it also incurs a fair amount of headache-ness and pioneering spirit.
*phew* Long post, better get back to work!

Yup GPS works out of the box and it is free. In fact, there were a few pleasant surprises (and some very minor unpleasant ones). Here’s a summary:
1. Free GPS. If you buy the non-AT&T version it comes bundled with the free version of TomTom navigator software (which turns out to be excellent). You get one free city map, so I got Chicago. [Pleasant surprise]
2. It takes five minutes the first time you use it to get a signal, and it only really works well outdoors. [Unpleasant surprise]
3. After you get your first signal, subsequent connections take one or two seconds.
4. Contrary to my expectations, the refresh rate is less than one second. I was really surprised when I was walking around town with the device. If I took two or three steps forward, the cursor on the map moved with me. I always thought that this sort of thing would refresh every 10 seconds, or maybe even every minute, but it felt ‘real-time’ so-to-speak. [Pleasant surprise].
5. Tomtom has all sorts of interesting features. You pick a location X on a map, and it tells you how to get there DEPENDING ON THE MODE OF TRAVEL YOU CHOOSE. You can pick from walking, driving, biking, etc. The route and estimated time and distance adjust appropriately. All for free! Also, all of the navigation instructions are spoken to you by a British girl voice. Other voices/languages cost extra. British girl is fine by me though. [Pleasant surprise].
6. Tomtom’s wonderfulness notwithstanding, I’m not sure yet how to access GPS through any other means. I’ve been told that Google maps couples with GPS, but I haven’t figured out how to do this yet. There is no Windows Mobile system application that simply readys off your coordinates as given by the GPS satellites.
I’ve only had this device for a few days, so keep reminding me to post more information as I learn to use the device more effectively. the one-free-map thing might sound less like a feature and more like an absence of one once I start travelling elsewhere.

I like the Kaiser 120 the best (the model with both cameras), but I don’t think AT&T will have that model. Just the 110 with the 3MP camera and the 110 without camera. The Kaiser is less bulky than the E90, with very similar specs. Also, I do not know if there will be any discount on the E90 like there will be with teh AT&T versions of the kaiser. That LG KS20 is even sweeter, IMO, because of its size and the lack of QWERTY keyboard which is fine with me. It has a touch screen and a flash for the camera, but the camera is only a 1.9 MP. If the LG was out at the same time or earlier than the Kaiser in the US, I would get it in a heart beat.

To: HTC Corporation
To whom it may concern,
The lack of ATI Imageon hardware driver support and the 7200 chipset driver support on the TYTN II is obvious. The TYTN II, which claims to be superior to most all current devices on the market, is lacking serious driver and hardware support when it comes to Video playback. In fact, anything that has to do with Direct Draw, Direct X and any fluid movement of pixels on the screen seems behave in an unacceptably slow manner.
Even the camera application that comes with the device slows down to such a slow frame rate that photos are not able to be captured, and cause videos to record and render slower than a sideshow. Videos captured from a third party source render faster on devices over 3 years older using slower technology.
There are many TYTN II owners experiencing the same exact results that have been briefly explained above. The lack of speed in rendering video or 3D content on the TYTN II seems to be a direct result of poorly coded and even missing driver support. If HTC is unable or unwilling to resolve this issue, please prove a full fledge SDK release so that phone owners can repair what HTC was unwilling or unable to do.
Thank You,
All TytnII/ATT Tilt/T Mobile MDA Vario III owners.
Sincerely,
Ryan Spencer
