AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, or Google Wireless?
Ever play the game of telephone? (Pun intended) You know…where someone says something and passes it on, and by the time it gets to the end, it’s turned into something completely different? Well, rumors of the much-salivated-over and coveted "Google Phone" may not be a handset at all. Google may be shooting for play-space in the carrier sandbox. According to Richard Whitt, Washington telecommunications and media counsel at Google, there’s a chance that they will make a play for licensee rights to the upcoming 700 MHz band that the FCC is going to auction off. "We have not ruled in or out participating in the auction as a licensee," says Whitt. "Whether or not we do get involved [in the auction], we see some value in creating these kinds of platforms." Google has complained in the past that working with carriers is troublesome, so having their own network and service would certainly alleviate those kinds of issues. Ring ring.

Could it be possible that Google wants to use their huge cash stash to get into mobile/ I can’t see them bulding out their own network, but they do have deep pockets.
A safer bet would be to buy tmobile or a smaller carrier and transform it into their own image. It’d be a lot cheaper to buy then to build.
Buy t-mobile? come on! T-mobile might be small in the states but they are huge in europe, not to mention they are a subsidery of Deutsche Telekom. MVNO is probably a better option at this point, especially since a lot of the useable frequency bands being taken up by current operators.
Google? LOL! All I have to say is when are they getting the curve and what are their rate plans like? Otherwise TMo
@jarrod: Dude, DT’s market cap is about $75 billion. Google’s is more than twice that. They could easily buy DT, let alone purchase TMO from them.
true, but what i was going for is that T-mobile isn’t exactly lookin for a buyer. Ya know?

jarrod… T-Mobile is absolutely open to a buyer for its U.S. division. DT’s stock has been going up (along with Sprint’s) in anticipation of this. Look it up on the financial wires.
