Alltel Launches Caller CityID

Tired of your land line’s caller ID being more reliable then your cell phones? Alltel is about to change that. They aren’t going to include the name of the person calling like on your home phone (why not?), but they will show the city and state where the call is originating from. With long distance virtually free on most mobile phones, knowing the city that the call originated from will help you make a more informed decision to answer or not. The first phone to carry this feature is the LG AX275 with a 15-day free trial. The service will run an extra $1.99 a month after the trial. They expect to roll this out to a lot more phones soon so keep checking!

I don’t see how this could be useful. I would rather see the name of the caller. I couldn’t care less about where they are calling from.

Correction: Sprint displays the state, but not the city

I’ve had this on my Treo since the beginning of the year….sometimes it’s handy, other times it’s just a novelty.

I have used this app for almost three years on my Treo 650. It is very useful for me - if the caller isn’t in my very large address book I usually don’t answer the call. However, if I realize it is a Bay Area call and I am expecting a call from someone there, I’ll go ahead and answer it. It is tied into the caller’s Area Code and Exchange, so unlike what Johnny Said (above) believes, you won’t know if your kids are calling from Florida if they are using their own cell phone.
