Verizon BlackBerry 8830 Launch Issues
Verizon’s Blackberry 8830, the World Edition, seems to be having a hard time making it’s global debut. Customer service reps have said the "website and sales department can not process any orders because of a glitch with the process." Currently Verizon Wireless’s site is experiencing a bit of a lag when trying to visit pages relating to the BlackBerry. It looks as if the phone might only be available via the business channel today by calling (800) 899-4249. If you are in the market for the new BlackBerry on Verzion, we suggest that until it is available on the site, you try business sales.
Thanks, Mikey!

Ordered mine – $99.
$299 because I’m a current customer
- 100 free every 2
- $100 because I upgraded from $99/1500mins to $109/2100 mins
Spoke with Vanessa at ext 5177
I am from NY.
It will be here in 2 days
Mine just arrived – two day FedEx, as promised.
It’s all set up and working beautifully!
Do you have personal or business? I have tried several times to order using some of the above numbers, but I keep getting passed around and end up hearing that I can only order if I am a business account. The website now says the general release is May 28 and only business customers with 5 or more lines can order it now.
What about Virginia?
And the “every 2 year” program assumes that you renew your plan for 2 years right? My plans ends in August and I certainly do NOT want to renew for 2 years.
Those that got the phone, is is yet another pop tart? I am debating between this and the real Pearl over on another network.
I have a personal account and was able to order my 8830 yesterday in the Ohio area through Ezekiel at 866-745-4679, press 1 for English then enter extension 7103. Phone was $399 with 2 yr agreement, (-) $100 Mail-in rebate, (-) $100 new-every-2 credit, (-) $100 for data plan of $44.99/month. Total cost $99 + Tax. Of course I also added the leather case, bluetooth headset and car charger for an additional $53. Should get the 8830 and accessories Friday or Monday!!!
The number you gave gets me in a loop, can you send me another number, I am dying over here…
What number did you call in NY?
Just ordered mine today. Called the business line and got it all taken care of in short order. With all the discounts and NE2 credit it came to just $99. I also bought a small bundle of goodies to get free overnight shipping.
No way lose on this deal with the 8830 selling for $800+ on eBay. Can’t believe people are actually paying that, but it appears to be the case.
Question:
Which Blackberry is better… 8830 or The Curve?? Is the broadband on The Curve much slower??
Thanks for your help!!!!
As far as I know the Curve isn’t available on Verizon. It’s Cingular only. Without Cingular HSPDA support, the Curve will be dog meat slow compared to Verizon EV-DO. On the flip side, the 8830 doesn’t have a camera and reportedly Verizon disables GPS support.
I want a phone for calls, e-mail and fast Web access. The 8830 delivers, the Curve does not. Lack of broadband is show stopper in my book.
I have it — didn’t believe rumors about GPS being disabled. Both Verizon and Blackberry company support still do not believe Verizon would disable. Will give Verizon until general release date to enable GPS, if not will return. Why have this instead of Pearl or Curve if no GPS? Internet still painfully slow — prefer laptop. Verizon blows this phone by disabling GPS. WHY???
Thanks, BJE… I wonder why Verizon doesn’t support the GPS… I also wonder when a phone will come out that has everything… I guess it is only a matter of time. I think back to my StarTac, when that was incredible… Not that long ago…
RMT… The Internet on the 8830 is slow??? Why??? This whole thing is frustrating. I just want a kick ass, everything phone.
DS
According to PC Mag’s review, the 8830 has speeds of 600 kbps down and 30-50 kbps up on the EV-DO network. So it’s similar to DSL and should be pretty fast. We’ll see!
WHen is the Curve expected to come out? If no one knows ecaxt date, do u think its gnna be out by the summer or mid summer?
Can anyone who now has this phone confirm / deny the GPS capabilities? Also, does it come with the BB Maps still?
It does have BB Maps, which is comparable to Google Maps that I had on my previous device, a Treo. From what I can tell, the GPS capability is there but not accessible. In the menu choice on BB Maps for GPS services, the only option is None and can’t be changes. So I think it’s disabled (although I’m guessing it will be hacked soon.
Overall I like the phone. Internet is really fast. Keyboard is a bit of a let down.
Anyone have a number for PA. Not a business customer but wanna give it a try anyway
I tried typing on the 8830 the other day… I didn;t love it.
Does anyone know why Verizon disabled MMS messaging and if there’s anyway to get it back?
I am trying to buy this phone and here is my situation…
-Eligible for an early upgrade(not eligible for ne2)
-Adding a data plan to my account as i will be a BB newbie
The CSR told me that I could purchase the phone, but I would not be eligibile for the $100 discount for adding an unlimited data plan. Does this make any sense to anyone?
You should qualify for the $100 discount. The rep I talked to said this kicked in with a data plan and a voice plan of more than $39. I bought a phone for myself and got all the discounts so it was $99 (with rebate). I then got a second for my wife on a family share plan and it was $249 (including a $100 rebate). He said I only got $50 off for the data plan, but the voice portion didn’t qualify.
To net it out, you should get at least $50 off.
Okay…here’s the skinny…
$399.99 Price
$299.99 after $100 rebate
$199.99 after $100 credit for adding data
If you are eligible for NE2, then you would get an additional $100 off bringing the total to $99.99.
NO GPS (for now). It is likely that GPS will be enable down the road…but this is Verizon ladies and gentlemen, and they are known for disabling key features…too bad they have the BEST coverage.

Here is a paste of the main text of a post from the Crackberry.com website forums about the 8830’s GPS:
“I am a VZW corporate customer (I’m a small business owner) and I was told the GPS will be fully functioning in approximately 1 month with a software upgrade. Looks like they rushed this out the door before it was fully ready for prime time.
On a side note, I was told the 8830 is the largest initial order VZW has ever placed for a hardware launch and it was also RIM’s largest order for the launch of a new model.”
