BlackBerry 8120 to replace the BlackBerry Pearl?

Leave it up to our infamous tipsters because the updated BlackBerry Pearl everyone was talking about, could turn out to be the BlackBerry 8120. What would the BlackBerry 8120 have over the current BlackBerry Pearl? I thought you’d never ask! For starters it should be out the first week of September or around there, and have "atleast 3 or 4 new color choices". The color of the case is all well and good, but what can we expect to find inside? A 2 megapixel camera, GPS, and WiFi. Waiting for confirmation on a carrier, but if I was a betting man, I’d place a wager on T-Mobile launching this device in September.

UPDATE: It seems as if Rogers in Canada will be launching the updated BlackBerry Pearl in September, with a U.S. carrier getting a "one week jumpstart". In addition to that, the rumored colors are said to be "black, red, titanium, blue, and gold".

I don’t care about all those colors, just as long as they offer black. GPS and WiFi would be nice. But as it was said before me, “we’ve heard that before”.

Concurrent with what Engadgetmobile.com is reporting about RIM and Wi-Fi, it seems as though this may very well be the first Wi-Fi capable device RIM will launch:

“Senior Vice President David Yach let it slip that the company’s first WiFi-capable handsets will launch in the second half of 2007″ - Engadgetmobile.com

This also disappoints me a little in that the Curve, if launched by T-Mobile in June, will most likely not have Wi-Fi as RIM confessed they’ve had problems with getting Wi-Fi to work on their devices (i.e., current devices).

Are you kidding me? All of a sudden the Curve isn’t so Curvelicious. If all those features are going to be on the next Pearl, do I wait even longer still? This is getting old.

Why couldn’t they just make the new Curve and new Pearl with the same features(gps, wifi and 2meg camera)? One with qwerty and one with suretype? No? Let’s make this a difficult process, why don’t we?

I bought the Pearl when it first came out in September 06. Are these features enough to motivate me to buy the “upgraded model?” NO!

    WiFi - Don’t need it.

GPS - Maybe, but so far not into GPS on a Pearl type device.

2mp Camera - Not much difference between that and the current camera, so this does not impress me. Guess this is more for people thinking about getting a first Pearl, so RIM can say it has a 2mp cameras like other competitors have done.

Colors: I am fine with black, especially since I keep my phone in a case, so it does not matter what color it is.

Wants: It would be nice to see video camera capability. That might cause me to “upgrade.”

Bottom line: Seems this phone is more geared to attract new phone purchasers and not to attract current users. But as a new device, the Pearl with these features will become an even more awesome phone. I love my Pearl in its present state. :)

One other note: Since the Pearl is RIM’s phone to attract consumers [and not techno geeks], seems like much of what the Company decides to put into the Pearl will depend on what it perceives will be attractive to know-nothing consumers.

So I am a bit surprised that they will be putting in GPS inasmuch as most consumers won’t use that feature.

Maybe they are including WiFi and GPS simply because most uninformed consumers know only to ask if it has those features and if the device does not, they shop elsewhere.

Kinda like camera manufacturers went crazy with increasing megapixel count simply because uninformed consumers believed [erroneously] that the higher the megapixel count, the better the camera must be. Never mind that 99% of consumers would not need more than about 3.2 megapixels, especially since most only use digital cameras to upload the pic on to the Net and send by e-mails.

Seems the Pearl is the same way. Consumers [those 195 million U. S. non-business users] don’t know anything except to see what is on the list of features. If one phone has more features than the competitor, then get the better sounding phone. Never mind that most consumers don’t understand how to use those features nor will they ever use them.

Of course, all of the above requires one to accept that the Pearl is RIM’s venture into the consumer market. If you don’t, then never mind. :)

Not all consumers are uninformed, and for those who are, some of the benefits of having a smartphone with Wi-Fi (especially if you are like me and have wireless internet access points throughout your business and home) benefit from VoIP–whereas the “uninformed” consumer can be on the phone while accessing the web at the same time. Now, the only feature superior to Wi-Fi for this capability would be 3G compatability; however, since neither BlackBerry, nor many service providers, are creating smartphones beneficial enough to comply, the issue of Wi-Fi as well as additional functionality is not only “better sounding” but better comsumer quality.

If it can make breakfast too, I am sure many “uninformed” consumers would find it more useful than not.

    To each his own…

The majority of consumers who buy cell phones are uninformed. They make choices based on flash, color, and the cool factor.

If it was otherwise, do you think RIM would be coming out with consumer-oriented changes, such as multiple color choices and multi-media features. To be sure, the changes are not to attract users who make informed decisions.

My post is not meant to insult those of you whom are informed, you know, the type of people who would visit this site, much less post a comment :)

I’m simply talking reality. The reality is that any electronics company hoping to attract a large segment of consumers to their cell phones has to give those people what they want.

Don’t take my word for it, take a look at all the advertising out there. I have not seen any mass market ads talk about business use, they all emphasize the hip or cool factor.

Yes, there is a business segment out there, but I am referring to the consumer market that RIM is trying to break into.

Come on wake up: HSDPA is Narrowband before it starts. You might get 700Kbps if lucky, no matter what the Carriers promise.
Just wait until the users try using these tools for real broadband services like, video upload, P2P, Multiplayer gaming and Music Uploads. These Cell Nets will go to their knees and will drive their VOice users to start experimenting with the real Broadband service offered via these new Wireless Mesh Networks and their VoiceIP services. DO I hear 2-6 Mbps per User-that is what we get on our Mesh.

I routinely get 900-1100kbps on my HTC Trinity on Cingular in Seattle. Switched from Verizon for the speed and so my carrier couldn’t control my choice of handsets. Won’t give up having a smart phone with touch screen and 3.5G. Blackberry keeps trying to lure me, but can’t bring the set of tools I need to the table.
