Rogers quietly releases Red BlackBerry Pearl

In a move that seems to indicate that RIM cares as little about the "special edition" Red Pearl as the rest of us, Rogers has released the device with almost no fanfare. It showed up on the carrier’s website sometime over the last 3 weeks, with no apparent press release. All announcements aside, the Red Pearl is currently available for an eye-gouging $249 with a 3 year contract. What is it with Canadians and extended contracts? The U.S. standard 2 years seems like punishment enough. The device has the usual assortment of features, including a 1.3 megapixel camera, media player, and the not-so-new signature trackball. If you’re a Canadian resident and feel like taking the plunge, head on over to the Rogers site for some Red Pearl action.
Thanks James!

You think the contracts are bad you should see the insane amounts we have to pay for data!

Can anyone say oligopoly?!?
I can live with a 3-year contract when there is only a $200 cancellation fee (basically negating the hardware subsidy), but how about some competitive pricing on voice/data that is more in line with our friends from the south…. unlimited in country calling and unlimited data would be nice, even if it did cost me $250/month.

It’s embarassing how much Canadians are forced to pay for not only mobile phones but mobile service. My Canadian phone bill is about 3x as much as it was compared to when I lived/worked in the U.S. Rogers is the worst offender, nickel and diming everyone for the littlest things. Voicemail? That’s extra. Caller ID? That’s extra. I could go on and on and on…
