Microsoft’s recently announced Silverlight browser plugin is poised to set a new standard for cross-platform compatibility. Microsoft has confirmed compatibility for Mac and PC platforms, with public beta’s already in the wild. Notably lacking from the public trials, however, has been any sort of mobile client. The company has announced plans to incorporate Silverlight into their mobile browsers, but has yet to set any sort of timetable for the release of a beta or finished product. A video has surfaced today of two high-level Microsoft players, one of which is Scott Holden of .NET product manager fame, demoing a mobile version of Silverlight on an HTC Vox. They walk through a number of different Silverlight applications, demonstrating the real-time update capabilities of the new framework. All told, this demo looks pretty hot. It wasn’t clear if this was a new standalone application, or simply functioning as a plugin for an existing browser such as Pocket IE or Deepfish. Whatever the platform, let’s hope Microsoft gets moving and releases this one before someone else beats them out of the gate.
