RIM Officially Announces BlackBerry Curve

I guess we were off a little. As we hinted earlier in the week, the BlackBerry Curve has now been officially announced by RIM, apparently heading to AT&T initially in the United States. The website is now live aswell at, http://www.blackberrycurve.com

The press release comes with details on the device, including new additions of a 2 megapixel camera with 5x digital zoom, a currently available and supported A2DP Bluetooth audio profile, a newly designed media player, a revamped desktop media manager, based on the ever-popular Roxio Easy Media Creator, that now provides CD ripping and photo editing functionality. Photos taken from the device can be instantly uploaded to your Flickr account, by way of Yahoo! Go. Nice! In terms of value-added services, it appears Research In Motion has really stepped up their game in the attempts to make this device appeal to all walks of BlackBerry life.

    I must have missed something. What are the benefits of having wifi on a BB if it already had internet service?

    I really think this is the final specs regardless of provider. Just like the Pearl and the 8800. They are all the same for every provider. I don’t see any difference with the Curve.

    If and when they add GPS, Wi-Fi and a camera on a BB, it’ll be an entirely different model (9100; 9300; 9800) I think.

    Think about it. Are they going to have a separate presentation page for each different model of the Curve? The Pearl and the 8800 don’t.

    Maybe I’m wrong, but it sure looks like a familiar path.

    That being said, I will gladly purchase the Curve and enjoy it for the time being. :)

    Any word on performance? I find the 8800 to be significantly slower than the 8700.

    just a couple of things i noticed -
    on the cnet review of the Curve, the editor said that it would be released to AT&T/Cingular. She did also say that there was no official release date, however i just looked at the official blackberry accessory website : http://www.shopblackberry.com/_blackberryaccessories/cgi-bin/go.cgi/webstore/category_by_model?category=BlackBerry%208300

    and their accessories for the blackberry curve are said to be available on dates like March 8th and June 1st. My guess to a release date might hinder on around those two times.

    just my guess – but we will see soon enough

    im getting aggravated – this needs to come to T-Mobile asap.

    Did you mean May 8th I believe. This release will be totally different from other Blackberry’s. I hope RIM can crank these units out…they are going to have to.

    Yawn…

    Looks like the iPhone is remaining at the top of my list, especially given that our company has just dropped using Exchange Server altogether due to the inflated costs of Microsoft’s crappy proprietary technology and expensive CALs. We also let go of two of the three IT guys. only need one to handle the companies POP/IMAP email and iCalendar is support-free.

    @MoMo:

    BGR posted pictures in the gallery of an 8300 series device *with* WiFi support. Further investigation revealed that the device was pre-loaded with the default T-Mobile Zen theme, and the T-Mobile MyFaves (five_click) application preinstalled, with no other carrier-specific themes.

    Chances are AT&T will get the initial 8300, but the 8320 (or so it’s been dubbed) will most likely end up with T-Mobile to attract additional HotSpot customers. Like the MDA, SDA and Dash that precede it, T-Mobile’s 8300 will probably support a HotSpot connection manager that wasn’t available when the preproduction unit landed in BGR’s hands.

    With the above information to hand, I’m fairly certain there is a T-Mobile 8300 looming with Wi-Fi capabilities. There’s no other reason BGR would end up with a device that has all of T-Mobile’s branded features preloaded otherwise. It’s just a matter of time — probably in June.

    I initially wanted to spring for the 8800, but BGR’s reporting has kept me from jumping. I’m fairly confident we’ll see T-Mobile add the 8300 to the lineup soon.

    @Jaron Brass

    That’s true. I did see that as well. I hope you’re right. I just hope they don’t cripple the Wi-Fi. It sounds like TMO could be ready to give Wi-Fi a go though. I guess we’ll have to wait till June to see.

    Sent my 8800 back to T-mobile last week. Crappy keyboard and no camera couldn’t overcome the thin and slick looking phone. Guess I’ll have to wait patiently (w/o a cellphone!) until this thing comes out on T-mobile. I am HOPING it’s coming out in a week or so – not a month or so. If it takes any longer, I’ll probably snag the iPhone since I’ve been out of my T-mobile contract for a couple years now.

    I don’t know what to do. I have a camera phone now, and hardly use the feature. However, I drive everywhere and like the idea of GPS. Plus, they have those 8800 condoms you can put on them to give them the “rubber look”. I type very little, and loved my old 8700g. Plus I heard the earliest for TMO on the 8300 is mid to late June, and it’s going to be about $100 more then the 8800 upon release; $449.00 for a phone? Don’t thunk so…

    How odd. RIM makes this big announcement about the new 8300. There’s a flurry of chatter on the Internet; “Oh AT&T is getting it!!!, no TMO is getting it! Oh I can’t wait!!!! Stay Tuned!!!”

    Now nothing…not even a peep. What the F&^K??!!

    MoMo, Jaran,

    More specifically, watch for the 8320 in conjunction with, or shortly after, the national launch of T-Mobile’s HotSpot@Home service.

    Wireless Geek,

    That begs the question, “When will T-Mobile roll out its hotspot@home service?” I returned my 8800 a couple weeks ago with the hope that the 8300 would be out for T-Mo by now.

    Thx,

    I have been patient waiting for something new and great released for Tmo. I’ve had the 8600 for a year now, watched my company switch over to 8800 with their audio/video media and gps capabilities and almost went for the perl just to get the camera and 8800 like features, until I learned of the blackberry that will satisify all bb-man’s desires.. A cross-over between the 8600 and 8800 with the amazing camera feature of the pearl. Blackberry curve. I am going for this bberry hands down wallet open, screw it! I use my blackberry 24/7 emails, phone, internet – and finally I don’t have to say “I wish I had a camera” and now I can also enjoy multimedia? CURVE!!
