New AOL homepage looks familiar

AOL is beta testing a new homepage, integrating a number customizable Web 2.0 features in a rich, ajax-y environment. This is a welcome change from the antiquated layout of their existing portal page, but I still kinda’ liked it. The new design will certainly provide the AOL faithful with a more dynamic and enjoyable experience. Does all of this sound familiar? If it does then you’re clearly having a case a deja vu. Yahoo went through a similar redesign process over 10 months ago. If you take a look at the two home pages next to eachother, you’ll see a striking resemblance. This would be more than acceptable if AOL had been a bit more timely, but 10 months in the tech game is akin to 10 years in real time. There may be some hidden, revolutionary features in the AOL version that are being saved for the full release, but it’s more likely that AOL missed the boat, panicked, and had to do some major mimicking design work in a short period of time.
