Sprint Announces PPC-6800

Sprint has sent out the data sheet for their upcoming PPC-6800 (HTC Titan). What a great phone, if it only included Windows Mobile 6 and EV-DO Rev A., instead of hinting at the possibilities of being able to upgrade later. Featuring a 2.8" QVGA LCD screen, WiFi, Bluetooth, microSD card, and 2-megapixel camera with flash, auto-focus and camcorder, it is expected to launch late next month as the replacement to the PPC-6700.

how difficult is it to upgrade this to WM6 and EVDO Rev A?

Shouldn’t be hard at all — Sprint theoretically would most likely release an update package you run, which will update the device to the new OS, and enable EV-DO Rev A.

What would be the Sprint monthly charges?
Maybe all those people disappointed with T-Mobile’s Herald/Wing will jump to Sprint 6800/Hermes rather than Cingular and the 8525/Hermes

Updating operating systems on windows mobile phones (or any phone for that matter) is a complete pain. The phone companies never give a rats ass about supporting you. It soured me on the whole damn thing…

Are we really surprised. They would rather you buy a new phone with wm6 loaded.

I wouldn’t buy this phone until WM6 and EVDO REV A are available for it. Don’t believe the “we’ll make an update available later” crap.
Sprint is TERRIBLE about keeping promises on updates (like the EVDO patch that never materialized for the PPC-6600 - google it if you’re interested in details).
If these two features are important to you, don’t buy on faith that they will keep their promises.

by my (probably errant) figures - this will cost the same each month for about 900 anytime minutes and unlimited data as the T-Mobile Herald.
The Herald is only 200mhz, the Titan 400mhz. The Herald is Edge, the Titan is EVDO with possible Rev A.
No contest. T-Mobile will lose all there Windows Mobile customers.
Am I missing something? Is Sprint customer service THAT bad? Why bother with T-Mo anymore?

@jc
This is intentionally a p.i.t.a. because Joe User typically will not update the phone, he’ll take it to the carrier who will do it (and maybe charge him for it.)
Plus, as JJLO stated, they would rather sell you a new phone (profit) than to help you upgrade (costly).

I think I would hold out for EVDO Rev A before upgrading unless my PPC 6700 took a nasty turn for the worse.

all of y’all are on the right track.
Now that Winmo6 is out, I can’t see any reason why someone would buy a device with Winmo5 unless you’re buying it from a friend and the friend gave you a good price, but not a NEW unit.
Really surprising that Spring is coming out with a new unit that has Winmo5 - I still can’t believe it….
I just wonder if people will actually buy these things!

Here is more of a generic question regarding the phone. This will be my first smartphone, and I will use if for work a lot, does it really make a difference having the other 2 upgrades that new smartphones are coming out with ie. winmo6 and EVDO Rev A. On that note I have no idea what they do. I heard the last phone model was really good though. Sorry for not know but could someone help please?

well like all new purchases - if you really need something now, then get it.
But if it’s something you can wait for, then I think it’s worth the wait to get something with Windows mobile six.
Reason is - mobile devices are not real easy to upgrade to a new OS. And you’re never sure whether the mfgr or the service provider will even OFFER that upgrade. Talk is cheap…

People like me who has never used WinMo could care less whether I get it with v5. I have similar sentiments with EVDO 0 or A. I currently have the Treo 650 which has slow internet not to mention the phone is now getting really old for me. I have not been too crazy about Sprint’s phone offerings and have been hounding them about when they’re going to catch up. Cingular and Verizon always gets the best phones. They have been losing market share because of inferior phones. So for me, I will buy the 6800 no matter what.

six months is a long time for the mobile phone world… Especially now. This year is going to see a TON of changes happening.
Hopefully all good for the consumer.

I had a similar item from HTC (Cingular) that worked well, however a poor signal caused me to opt for Sprint.
I am awaiting the 6800, but am dissappointed that it is not configured with 6.0. Please let me know what you find out.
Thank you…..

I think i would rather have it come out may 14 and have an upgrade, then have it come out june, july and have a phone that is outdated.

what are some other options besides the 6800 with sprint?
personally I’d like to have the larger screen reminiscent of the 6600, and the I700.

Sprint has no plans on releasing this phone anytime soon. I talked to someone who works at corp and they said the corp accounts can have a 60day trial of the phone and that is it. So I don’t know if the May 14th release date is very true.

IM starting to think this is whats goin on…. Not saying it is, it just crossed my mind.
Now, i have read in some forums that business reps have had it in there hand and that it was running WM6. What i think sprint might be doing is getting out to all the places that have RevA, and then move to the none RevA so that this could buy them sometime to put WM6 on all of them. They probably figure they will be done buy October. This is why i think some people are getting some dates saying this Monday, and others are getting October or even worse next year.
Im most likely wrong, but it did cross my mind so though i would share it Smile
