T-Mobile BlackBerry 8800 Unboxing

Yesterday, the T-Mobile BlackBerry 8800 was launched and is only available online and through customer service. We’ve got our hands on one. It’s pretty much the same as the AT&T version with EDGE, QWERTY keyboard, multimedia player and the like. T-Mobile’s website has no mention of GPS on the 8800, and this has been a subject of some concern for some folks. You can put you’re mind to ease, this does include free unlimited use GPS tied into BlackBerry Maps (although we recommend you download MapQuest Mobile). Switching from one BlackBerry to another is simple with the included Desktop Manager. It is running OS v4.2.1.74.

At $349 for a new line of service or full upgrade discount, and $469 for a partial upgrade discount, this is quite more expensive then the AT&T model, which has been seen for around $75 on Amazon. It’s still the best BlackBerry available out right now, that is until the 8300 model launches.

According to my.t-mobile.com, it’s showing at $349.99 for an upgrade, the same price as a new line of service.

I still see no reason why I should give up my 8700. after one year its still a very capable device and durable as hell. Until 3g gets let out ill probably just ride this baby until the wheels fall off. not enough difference between the 87 and 88 to warrant 400 plus and another two year.

Read up on some of the previous postings by the boy genius for more details, but here’s basically what the rumor mill is saying: the 8320 will have a camera and wifi, NO GPS! That’s going to be released most likely May 7th. You’ll have to wait for the 83xx for a camera and GPS. But things change daily so you never know. But this is a 8800 posting so back to that topic……..

I called t-mobile and they told me that the 8800 has GOS but as of now they did not have support of it. It could be the person I spoke with didn’t know what she was talking about…

    Dr Jimmy,

As I was alerted to the other day, Tmobile doesnt support GPS, but that doesnt mean it wont work. It will work just fine, but you wont be able to call Tmobile for tech support. Thats all.

it’s nice to see they didn’t remove blackberry maps like cingular did.

does that mean free gps directions? (i know it’s not voice guided, but hey, better than nothing!)

I personally think that charging an insane “$349″ for this phone that has no Camera, no Wifi, no 3G, no A2DP, and very a limited multimedia experience is a complete and utter rip off. RIM should have just made this exclusive for Cingular. We don’t want it. It does nothing for us T-Mobilers.

I tested the 8800 for three days and have to say the same as many here: I will wait for the 83xx devices. Though the display of the 8800 is better than the one my 8700 has.

I don’t know why people are all over the price. Currently the bb 8800 is still very exclusive within tmobile as the only way to order one is either from tmobile.com or by contacting customer service. BG comparing tmobiles price to Amazon.com isn’t that fair.We all know the deals we can get when ordering from Amazon. When comparring the price of the 8800 from cingular and T-mobile using cingulars and tmobiles websites cingulars price is really only $50 less due to a mail in rebate.

the 8300(curve series) so fare has no GPS functions
I’m waiting if they release an 8820
