BlackBerry BES & OS 5.0 Info

If your one of our readers that constantly refreshes BGR, waiting to the see the latest tips and scoops we can offer, you won’t be disappointed with the below BlackBerry intel. A BGR insider has just told us some details that will clear up a lot of the surrounding rumors regarding the 4.2 OS for the BlackBerr 8700, and 7310, while also giving us a peek into RIM’s BES plans.
  • BES Service Pack 4 will be released in June
  • The 4.2 OS for the BlackBerry 8700, and 7130 is completely ready on RIM’s end. It is now up the carriers to decide whether to release it or not
  • The "Wireless Upgrade" feature we showed you in our BlackBerry 8300 will at first be hosted directly from RIM, and will be completely available OTA with a possible release in June (it could infact be a little later though)
  • BlackBerry OS 5.0 is in the works with a talked about release during the "end of this year, or early next year" coinciding with RIM’s planned release of the BlackBerry 9xxx series
  • BES Admins will have updates automatically show on their screen in "pop-up ballons, sort of like current Windows Update do". This way they won’t have to keep checking for BES updates, and Service Packs.
That’s it for now, and a special thank you goes out to our mobile insider of the week, a high-level exec at RIM who shall remain nameless.

I’ll purchase a Blackberry when I’m able to watch YouTube videos + full Javascript/AJAX support + the ability to make VoIP calls with Skype over Wifi. I can wait until Google rolls out its WiMAX network with an Apple phone, if thats what it takes to get a phone with this sort of functionality.

The more I think about wifi on a BB, the more I feel that it’s redundant. If you’re paying $40-50 bucks per month for BB Connect which is available anywhere that you could make a phone call, then what use is it having Wifi?

What if I live near a corporate campus that is covered in Wifi, or a university for that matter? I think it would be a mistake to discount the relative utility that can be derived from Wifi vs. EVDO + HSPDA

Okay, let me re-phrase the question: What would you do with Wifi that you can’t do with BB Connect? (which you are required to have btw.)

Do you see where I’m going with this?

So will all 8300 models (specifically concerned w/ the GSM ones AT&T/TmobilE) have built in wifi that will have to be unlocked. Planning on buying a 8300 but I want the wifi (don’t care about the gps)…but was leaning toward at&t for the eventually 9x 3g bb upgrade.

So will both the tmobile / at&t 8300s have the wireless upgrade feature?

Randy - how about “not paying for your data usage”? that sounds like a pretty good reason to use WiFi rather than EVDO/EDGE…

Matt - “wireless upgrade” means upgrading the software on the device over the wireless network, not upgrading your device to enable new wireless radios. If the 8300 does not have WiFi as a feature, it isn’t in the product… you won’t be able to “upgrade” your 8300 into an 8320.

    badonkadonk;

You hit it right on the head. Paying a monthly fee for data services when I have wifi around me all the time doesn’t make sense.

I am a newbie for BB and I have found that it does what I want it to do and more. I can only wait for the “carriers” to decide on giving us the upgrade. Well lets enjoy it.

YOU ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE THE DATA PLAN. How does having wi-fi save you any money if you HAVE to have the data plan!?!?
