BlackBerry AIM, Live Messenger, and ICQ clients released

We’ve been yelling for it for a while now, and it looks as if RIM might be on track to release these clients very soon. You’re able to download the actual software now, but as the case with the Yahoo IM! and GoogleTalk clients, they are service book dependant and as of now, no carrier has started rolling out these IM service books. Browse to the links below from your BlackBerry to start downloading the software!

AIM: http://www.blackberry.com/aim

Windows Live Messenger: http://www.blackberry.com/livemessenger

ICQ: http://www.blackberry.com/icq

[Via BlackBerryForums]

UPDATE: Click here to download a .zip file with the correct service books, you will need to erase your current service books, and restore it with this file.

Why not just use the free JiveTalk IM client that connects to all the major networks? Since I have an account with all the networks, I would rather use one client that connects to all of them at the same time.

Hey BG, do you have any idea when T-Mobile will get the service books (if ever) so i can use it? Also why do you think some people over at BBF have reportedly gotten AIM to work?

a member claims to have the service books and is going to upload them tonight via bbf.

Bratan, you are not connecting directly to the service with jivetalk, but through their server. they are pretty small scale and if their server were to go down (or they quit the project, or became a pay program), everyone is stuck. this could provide a stable, consistent, means for the millions of bb users to connect to their favorite client (and it take from data, not txt as with OZ).

AIM won’t work if you are on BES unless your administrator allows this application to run. Apparently mine won’t. Just a heads up.

About the member who will be uploading the service books, are they going to be carrier specific? Because as it stands with the service books you have uploaded now i either have to choose between using the IM clients and the browser (depending on which service books I am using). Is there a way to combine service books rather than replace? Thanks

Found it …. copied from the forum. The zip file has a different name thoughalong with the ipd file. I THINK the instructions are the same though. Good luck!

holy smokes excellent. so for those that havent figured out how to get it up and running. Go to DM and go to restore and backup-restore and select the file included in the zip file. it will ask you to replace your service books with these click ok and when its done resend service books from your carrier and from the bb go to options-advanced optoions- Host routing table- and then menu there and register now and then the moment u open AIM its loogs you in.

How do these compare to their yahoo im app? I know their yahoo app was far superior to all in one’s due to the RIM integration. Does anyone have any screen shots of the applicaions? Thinking of going back to blackerry from my tytn.

    Anton Wahlman says:

First of all, GoogleTalk is the best-functioning IM program on the Blackberry because it allows you to be simultaneously logged onto several Blackberries and desktops.

Second, however, the instructions for downloading/installing AIM with its requisite service books are waaay too complicated. I don’t understand how to do it at all — someone would literally have to show me the steps in front of my eyes. Way too complicated terminology.

It’s too bad really that they don’t have the Desktop Manager installer file available: My provider is Rogers and they also say the same thing “Not Supported by your wireless carrier” yet I’ve seen in installed on a friend of mine’s RIM device (He works at RIM though and he’s also got 4.2 on his BB8700, jerk lol)

    GT says:

Read-only Service Books are due to the new BES servers wirelessly backing up your blackberry. When your administrator does that a bunch of things on your blackberry are now READ-ONLY and can not be restored by the individual, service books is one of them.
You have to remove yourself from being wirelessly backed up first.
    Then restore the service books
Then you can go back to being wirelessly backed up again.

I see the link for the service books, did I miss the WORKING link to the actual downloads for the programs?
