T-Mobile BlackBerry 8800 Launching April 23rd?

The rumor mill is bubbling with information as we have received a large number of tips stating that the T-Mobile BlackBerry 8800 will be launching on Monday, April 23rd. Some have said this would be a business-channel launch, and some have indicated otherwise. As always you can count on us working to confirm this intel, so take this as you will.

Also there was no specification on whether this was the BlackBerry 8800, or BlackBerry 8820. Go figure.

Thanks, to everyone that tipped us!

I called and spoke with customer care today and they have indicated that the 8800 is not available for upgrade and cannot give a date when it will be avail if ever. I was told that the only way I could receive one was to cancel my service ($200 cancellation fee) and set up a new line.

The stores don’t carry it and told me that they may not have them either.

Very dissaspointing as I have been a loyal customer for a long time. I’m considering switching me and my family away from T -mobile.

Sorry to hear you were so disappointed. THe 8800 was available online for upgrade from the 23rd when it was first listed until they sold out early on the 26th. They then expected all “open” orders to be filled by the 30th. No announced dates on when they will be available for upgrade again.

Had my 8800 for a little over a week now. I love it. It is so nice to have a good looking phone that – more importantly – has features that work well and logically.

One feature I like in particular is the voice activated dialing, which doesn’t cost a dime and doesn’t require any setup. Had this application been on another smart phone, it would have worked only half the time and been more of a headache that it is worth. The BB voice activated dialing is amazingly accurate and relatively quick. I was showing the feature to a client of mine who has the Treo and I started with a relatively simple name. He was impressed but said there was no way it would recognize his name, which is German in origin and has a “Jr.” in it (vs. his father who is a “Sr.” and is also in my contacts). To his surprise, it worked flawlessly.

Originally I had planned on returning the phone and getting the 8320, but am happy enough with this thing that I can live w/o a camera.

Can any of you that have the Tmo 8800 confirm/deny that it has WiFi?

Am I missing something? On T-Mobile site for BB 8800 there is no word about internal GPS feature. I called T-Mobile support and very nice but with no clue lady told me: “We don’t support GPS but we have GRPS” And she had to put me on hold so she can “come up” with that answer. :-)
Who to believe now? I’d hate to purchase this phone and find out that GPS is not working.
Is any GPS software shipped with the device or I need to get it from somewhere?

there are several options for GPS software, the phone comes with the gps receiver built in. You can use GoogleMaps(free), BlackberryMaps (free), Telenav ($10/ month) or a few others but those are the main 3. I use the free ones but the telenav is great, but im cheap.

Thanks a lot. So I assume that you purchased phone from T-Mobile and not some other provider.
Thanks again I’m going to give it a try.

Great, thanks. If I use Google Maps is there any additional charge from T-Mobile? I understand that Google Maps are free but is there any service fee associated with GPS traffic from T-Mobile? I have BB Enterprise service and 1,000 minutes right now. Sorry if I’m a little slow :-)

no additional charge, the gps functions are free, Google Maps will use data to get the maps. Not sure which data plan your on but most have the unlimited data plan therefore have no worries about data usage. Google maps is a good program, they just added the gps capability a few weeks ago.

If you don’t have a data plan for the phone, then you won’t be able to use the GPS. Is this correct??

    mikeyp says:

all the current GPS programs use the data connection to load the maps. Without the data, they will not work. You will be limited to going to the options section and the phone/gps will still acquire satelites but it will only give you your coordinates.

lol does anyone konw a way of getting around having to pay for the data plan? my previous phone before the 8800 was the HP IPAQ 6515a (unlocked from cingular) and the internet wasn’t working on it so I called tmobile and talked to their IT people and they had me change some configurations and all of a sudden the internet worked and I didn’t have the data plan!! They never charged me a dime and I used the net everyday.

not that i have heard of, especialy for blackberry. I cannot imaging getting a bb without data. The blackberries do not function the same as any other pda when it comes to data since they do connect to RIM servers to get email.

so again no, I’ve never heard of anyone getting internet/email without a data plan and many many have tried.
