does anyone know if you can make international calls through the voip calling function of the wi-fi enabled blackberry

is there a way to unlock a wifi function on the blackberry 8830 world phone?

I have the 8830 and it’s a month and a couple days old. I really want to get the voyager though but of course I am past the 30 day mark. I was wondering how I could get a voyager on my plan or if anyone wants to buy this blackberry off of me.

Purchased 8830 about a month ago and used it in Beijing, China. Was surprised that the reception was really great calling out of Beijing to Hawai`i. In fact the reception was much better than it was using it locally in Hawai`i. If you’re dialing to the USA, you need to change the default to 1XEV to GLOBAL and you must precede two “0’s before dialing the country code. EG. 001-808-1234. Using just the +1 area code will not work. Two things that need improvement would be first of all the numeric keypad needs to be of a different color; it was quite confusing to dial the numbers with the same color blue. Secondly, it would have been a great phone if there was an integrated camera! I sort of lost out not being able to take last minute photos while on my trip to Beijing.

…also, one more thought on the iPhone’s current shortcomings as compared to BB.

NO instant e-mail. Also, no multiple accounts enjoying the “always online” e-mail!

For those that have not tried, I can understand their saying “so what?”. For those of us that DO know…it is everything.

Well…not everything…..but the spine of RIM’s lure to the consumer. Adding the bells-and-whistles to someone like myself that uses her BB for both work and pleasure, well, need I say more?

If this happens…THAT ROCKS!

Currently I am done with my contract and can go to whomever I like. Thus the temptation from the lure of AT&T/Cingular down the road. I’ve asked friends and neighbors who have this service and have researched coverage in my area, and areas of travel, online and IT’S UNIVERSALLY CRAP. Bummer.

If this is true then I am one happy bunny!

No question, the iPhone is a nice attempt at duplicating features that are already bulletproof in BB’s. I’ve been advised the Curve for VZW should be in our hands by the end of the year, barring any problems in testing. That’s why I haven’t bothered getting the 8830 (I’m running an 8703e).

I see that now! Still, I am hooked on the BB instant e-mail. The 2 not 1.3 camera is good too. Really want a camera and the ability to watch video files, via the web or otherwise.

I have Verizon and where I live and travel to in New England AT&T/Cingular’s coverage area is CRAP. Verizon has the best coverage and call quality here.

My best bud has AT&T/Cingular and can’t wait to finish her contract as the calls are always either not able to be made or dropped. (so much for the TV ads…)

Currently I have a BB 7250 and like it well enough but really crave a multi-media/Cameraberry. I am hooked and will hold onto it until they get round to offer up a more “personal” BB version with all of the attributes of the Curve.

It’s hard though…I have been in the AT&T/Cingular store twice lately looking at the Curve! The iPhone doesn’t really tempt me as it does not have Bluetooth or mobile IM.

Either way, I wish that RIM and Verizon would get on it offering up a personal BB! I can’t believe that they don’t hear the cry out for this type of BB in their lineup.

I want to know FOR SURE they will re-enable the internal GPS. I get great service here with Verizon, and nada with Sprint. But Sprint’s 8830 has GPS enabled. UGH!

VERIZON SUCKS! This is a great phone, but Verizon has crippled the built-in “smart” phone features you pay for. In the end, you pay full price for a dumbphone!

Props to RIM for making a great phone… but go with Sprint. At least then you’ll be able to use Google Maps with GPS!!

Can someone tell me why Verizon disables features built into the devices (i.e. bluetooth data transfer and GPS)??? It’s very irritating that they go through the trouble to disable these features for no apparent reason. I just got an 8830 and discovered GPS was disabled- one of the main reasons I bought the BB. I have heard rumors that they will re-enable in August, but the fact they disable makes me not want to do business with them.

wanted to buy the 8830 bb, had heard you can unlock the gsm feature and use sim cards anywhere in the world. when i went to buy it, the vz shop told me that they cant transfer my 450 contacts from my 2 year old vz phone. I could not believe it.Unbelievable, I dropped the idea as trying to type in 450 numbers again is totally necessary.

I would stay away from this BB. The Cnet reviews are trashing it pretty thoroughly. Poor customer service and little support right now from VZ. Also, the keyboard is just tiny.

I am looking for an upgrade and I’ve been wondering two things that are unclear:
1. If I take it abroad is it locked to Verizon supported carriers or can i plug in another Sim and its only locked stateside. The follow up tothat is will Verizon unlock it.

2. Does it has a GPS reciever and no support software or no GPS at all. And the follow up to that is if it does have the hardware can you find usable software or is that locked to.

The BB 8830 is slick, but the ringer cannot be made loud enough to hear on a subway, or even across a room. I’m taking it back and swapping for the Treo for Windows CE.

$399 minus whatever discounts you are entitled to with Verizon, plus there seems to be a $50/$100 rebate available now. At least, that is what I experienced when I bought mine 5/27.

I spent ten years using Palm PDA’s and “regular” phones and just made the jump to BB. Verizon just released — today — the 8830, but I’m using the 8703e, which is the model below that one. It’s not as slick as the 8830, but it let me transfer ten years’ worth of calendar data, contacts, memos/notes and a huge to-do list and ported it over without much in the way of complication. Go to a Verizon store and play with the 8703e and the 8830. Personally, I think the 8830’s the better choice only because it’s new, but I prefer the keyboard on the 8703e, so it’s up to you. As for personal e-mail, contacts, calendar/datebook etc., either BB should be more than capable of working for you. And of course, if you dislike the BB interface (it’s possible but not likely) you can always swap it out and get another, new, “regular” phone.

If you do a lot of traveling to Europe, get the 8830, it is capable of being used in Europe (it’s GSM-capable).

Got mine this morning. I called customer service and got routed through to business sales. I told them I wanted to upgrade and let sent me one overnight.

You can only get it this way if you are due for an upgrade. The will not let you pay for it outright because they do not have the SKU and pricing in their computer system yet.

I dumped a Q for this because the Q just got so quirky that it would take 30-40 seconds to respond when I tried to do anything.

This is my first BB and it blows rings around the Q on performance…

I just purchased my blackberry 8830 this morning. You have to call Business sales. Verizon will only sell the phone if you are going to add a line to your current account or open a new account. Otherwise, they will send you to “customer care” and they will tell you that you have to wait until May 28th. Don’t tell them that you want to upgrade your phone . . . if you say that you will have to wait until May 28th.
