Bluetooth 2.1 enhances user experience

Faster speeds, quicker connections, and easier to setup? How can you go wrong with Bluetooth 2.1. Connecting devices will soon be as easy as tapping them together for those using the new NFC (near-field communications) technology. Security will be increased as well as power consumption lowered, resulting in a 5x longer battery life. No set date for these new bluetooth devices, but they will be fully backwards compatible, so don’t worry about waiting to buy that new phone you’ve been drooling over.

I sounds to me that that most of the improvements are at the protocol level. Is it unreasonable to think that existing BT 2.0 +EDR H/W could be upgraded to 2.1? I realize that’s H/W can’t be upgraded like BT Headsets. But for Stuff like Dongles and phones it certainly should be possible (although the mfrs of such devices will be unlikely to do it.)
