RIM to open up software APIs

One of the main things that differentiates RIM’s Blackberry platform from Windows Mobile and Palm, for the most part is, a lack of 3rd party software. RIM is aiming to change that. Announced today and beginning next Tuesday, the company will be opening up APIs to software developers, hoping to usher in a new generation of Blackberry-based mobile applications. This is an exciting move on RIM’s part, which should lead to further innovation and competition amongst the leading mobile platforms, which is always a good thing for the consumer. Now we all just need to brake in, and steal an 8800.

Am very glad to hear that RIM is doing this. It should allow many BB users to install more of the apps they want on their devices.

Great, now they just need to open up the API’s for BES so we can pick our own groupware.
