Unboxing: Sony Ericsson W880i

Sony’s latest Walkman phone takes a different route from their past lineup with the W880i focusing mainly on size, without losing features. I really didn’t expect this phone to be so thin, it’s quite astonishing. The specs are unbelievable which include: 3G (2100 band only), a 2 mega-pixel camera with front-facing video calling camera, good speakers, expandable memory, and a boatload of good software. The camera isn’t the best but gets the job done, and the speakers are loud and put out decent sound. One problem is there isn’t too much low end even with the "Mega Bass" equalizer option turned on but, what can you expect from a device of this size. Now for the most important part, the buttons and keypad. After all, what good is a phone when you can’t dial a telephone number? That’s not really the case here. The buttons and keyboard are no doubt small, in fact the smallest i’ve seen, but they are actually pretty usable. You wouldn’t want to write long emails and messages here but it gets you by. Nice OS features include a built-in RSS reader, good web browser, a pretty good selection of themes, and of course Sony’s Walkman software. Call quality was good, and earpiece volume was good too. All in all, not bad a bad experience. Oh, I never want to see a 3G phone that’s more than double this size ever again. There is no excuse anymore to have such thick phones that countless manufacturers still spit out. HTC, Motorola, Nokia, RIM, Siemens, LG, BenQ, TORQ, Pharos, you all listening? I got this phone a month ago. Everything is great but i have one major problem. The phone switches off by itself several times a day even when I have keylocked the phone. I constantly have to take my phone out of the pocket to check whether it is still switch on.
I assume the problem is the battery wasn’t in contact firmly but its not the case. Could anyone shed some light on this problem? The phone dealer said i probably would need a software upgrade or something. Please HELP!
I have the same problem with my phone. It turns itself off for no apparent reason.
same problem – phone keeps turning off by itself… its starting to be a real pain to use, i always haf to check to make sure there is reception and that the phone is on in the first place!
Same problem on my phone (orange firmware). Juast done an update but still the same. are you alll on on orange ?
My phone does not have this problem – you might want to look at updating the firmware. My phone has version CXC1250640 R1KG001 070418. You can find the information under Tools/Update Service/Software Version.
I’ve installed PC Suite on my Windows XP home laptop and the phone isn’t recognised (in any way at all) when I plug it into the USB port.
I’m assuming that getting the appropriate drivers would sort this out. Unless there’s some other wisdom out there could someone please post a link to the ’special’ usb drivers for the 880i.
Cheers

I also can’t get the sim out. Help!
where can I get the drivers to use the w880i phone as a 3g modem. I really need this because I have an unlimited 3g data plan and I travel alot.
Mmmh… ok SIMM is tight as it nearly slides all the way in so use your outside thumb to scrap it up and out. basically friction of skin.
As for turning off… my phone with the slightest bump ie placing it down on a hard surface eg a table! will cause it to turn off! NB this occurred in the first week and was reported to my carrier (three Australia) and after software upgrade and few master resets they agree that it is faulty! Though all my other three mates with this unit have never had this problem. So I got the dud!!!!! again!. So since it is after 15 days I can not get a new handset replaced today but must have it repaired which is four weeks. Really annoyed at them.

Hello
I have a w880i, i have had it for ages, and it is a really good phone, i love it,
I do have the turning off problem though.
They said they can take it to be fixed but i have read it takes weeks for them to fix.
So can you put it in easy terms what is wrong with it. can i fix it myself or will i have to send it in.
Appart from that a great phone!!!
Glad to hear the bumping problem isn’t just with me! Myself and my g/f (different model SE *model escapes me, but recent*) both have EXACTLY the same problem… Has been away for repairs multiple times with NO improvement each time… can anyone suggest anything?
Hey
i am now on my 3rd phone since april due to the turning off my tends to do it when dropped, not from great heights and not all the time.
Along with the turning off with the slighest bump, my phone also seems to have a very slow processing speed. Impossible to lock the keys in a hurry and navigating between screens can be delayed for seconds after pressing the appropriate key.
Won’t buy from Sony Ericsson again after this experience!
I had the same problem with my Blackberry Pearl. When your internal memory is used, it starts erasing the missed and received and made calls so it has more memory. You can search online about how to delete some of the memory you aren’t using. Some are like other languages. Hope this helped.
