Unboxing: HTC Vox

The HTC Vox aka S710 is a device BGR readers are surely accustomed to by now, right guys? Then we showed you the real phone here remember. Ever since leaking the first photo of the phone online the Vox has truly interested me. A smartphone with a screen that flips from portrait to landscape, courtesy of Windows Mobile 6 Standard, and a slide out, spring-assisted keyboard complete with great speakers can’t go wrong. Well, our first impressions agree! HTC is really leading the pack right now shutting down any kind of competition while making really quality constructed and well thought products. The only thing lacking here is 3G which would have really sealed the deal, but hey, the features simply out way the cons. Click on for the rest of the unboxing shots!

UPDATE: The camera is simply outstanding! The viewfinder refresh rate and clarity I have never seen on a mobile device like this, and the actual picture quality is the same. I have NEVER seen a 2 megapixel camera spit out images quite like these! Take that Nokia! Will post sample shots soon.

There looks to be a good bit of screen lag in the shift from vertical to horizontal orientation in the 12th to 13th picture. You can still see the outline and “ppoint” from the word “appointments” from the previously-vertical orientation. How much lag is there in this process, and does it happen everytime?

Yeah, not too bad. You’ll see that every once in a while but for the most part the screen flip is fine, and device in general is very speedy

Very nice!! Looking forward to hearing more of what you think about it. Any idea when us commoners will be able to buy the Vox? How’s the screen compared to the Dash?

I hope you can include a side view picture, it is still hard for me to tell how thick it is.

While not the best, due to the nonexistent 3g circuit but from a user of a Cingular 2125, I can definitely assume that this would be a nice upgrade. Will it be offered for a reasonable price or just another jacked up none 3g phone.

I don’t know Victor as a happy 3G owner of a Cingular 8525 I was really interested in this til I found out it lacked touchscreen and 3G.

Looks like a great little device! Any chance of getting a side view comparison with the Dash? Is the case plastic/metal/rubberized? How does the keyboard feel?

I think I’m going to get this phone when it’s released and switch back and forth between this and my Dash (thank God for Sim cards). My 700p and 700wx are seeing far less action from me lately. I’m looking forward to seeing what you think of the Vox compred to the Dash. Also how’s the Dash with the WM6 upgrade compared to the Vox? Any speed differences in terms of OS?

    Jay says:

Why is it that no manufacturer will make a phone with this same form factor and hard buttons but also include a touch screen? Those that do include a touch screen only have the directional buttons in the closed position and no phone buttons. If they’d add a TFT to this product I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

Why would you need to touch a screen this small. What…..to copy and paste ??

I would ask this question back. Why do you need buttons on the front if you want a touchscreen?

    Jay says:

I want a touch screen for use in different parts of the OS and other functions. When using a phone I do not like buttons on the touchscreen. I have that option on my Treo and find it difficult to accurately hit the right numbers.

I was digging around about the i760…do you know if there are any solid release estimates on that device?

I haven’t heard of anything solid… I would expect it sometime during Q2.
