InfoSpace Find It!

I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak at some mobile software by InfoSpace from one of my sources. It’s called Find It!, and I installed it on my BlackBerry 8800. Best of all it will be free when released towards the middle of next month. What’s really great is this app basically combines the need for many search and informational programs like, Google Maps, Berry 411, into one clean, easy to use program. Well, except for one thing, it finds your location by utilizing the built-in GPS. Awesome! The way it was designed has some great features for instance, let’s say your on vacation and search for a movie theatre. The nearest movie theatres pop up, but you don’t have any cash on you, no problem. You click ATM and it finds the nearest ATMs closest to the theatre because your going to be there anyway, right? You want to go out to dinner after the movie, click your favorite style of food and all nearest restaurants will pop up. If you want to Browse by Category, you can choose from six category options, including Dine Out, Go Out, Shop, Travel, Health and Services. Each category lists relevant local merchants or information, ranked by proximity to your current location. You can also quickly and easily find the fastest way from say, point A to point B with Maps & Directions. Find It! even give you voice guidance for directions. The voice directions are not locally stored on the device but I believe they are cached after you request them. Will report back on that feature. All in all I have to say, this could be my favorite BlackBerry application. It just makes the device so much more useful. Depending on the level of interest I might post the download link, don’t want to upset anyone, but this is BGR afterall right? Now if InfoSpace would just give me some stock…i’d really show some interest in this! Click on for a walkthough of the application.

UPDATE: Ok guys, you didn’t have to start emailing me, I was going to post the link anyway. Just wanted to have a little fun. Here is the download link for Find It! Visit it from your BlackBerry to download it OTA at http://bb.infospace.com/b

I also had the “Invalid COD”… That seems to be an OS bug on the 8800. It’s happened to me with other download, as well. Try taking the battery out and rebooting the BB. Worked for me then. Good luck!

I found and fixed the “Invalid COD” issue on the 8800. Restarting and taking your battery out is NOT the answer. Apparently the problem is related specifically to using Cingular’s MEdiaNet Browser. If you use the BlackBerry browser (which I had hidden and hadn’t tried until now), the install will work without a problem. I can verify the application is absolutely awesome…with one caveat…it would be 3x sweeter if they used Google Maps for their mapping!!!!

    Anyone , any ideas?

This is for T-Mobile users. If you are using Cingular go to google and type in “cingular APN” and find the correct address.

[T-Mobile users] Make sure your APN is correct. To do this go to OPTIONS>ADVANCED OPTIONS> TCP> APN make sure you “wap.voicestream.com” (no quotations) is entered, no username or password required.

Next check to make sure your Blackberry browser’s setting is set to emulate IE. Do this by going into your browser press the physical Menu button (the one with all the dots) and scroll down to OPTIONS>Browser Configuration and make sure it’s on “EMULATE MODE: Microsoft IE”.

then proceed to download Infospace from http://bb.infospace.com/rim

[If Infospace is already installed you might need to delete and reinstall that was the case in my situation].

I noticed I had to delete and reinstall Infospace Find It! to delete go to OPTIONS >ADVANCED OPTIONS> APPLICATIONS> highlight Inforspace and press the menu button and hit “delete”. click ok. then proceed to redownload infospace from address listed above.

Hope this works! It worked for me.

I have followed all your instructions (have the BB8800 with Cingular) and can only get so far with it. Arggggg. It can find where I am. I then enter my ending address and try to get directions… then it HANGS… everytime! APN setting are correct, reloaded the app a million times, etc. Any other thoughts? This is insane!

I am getting the exact same problem – When I put in my final destination is crashes!

I actually got past that a couple of times by putting in a manual start/finish address.

I heard the first voice prompt, but it never seemed to give me the next one, unless I selected it. That means I have to guess when I need the next prompt. If that is how this works, it is pretty much useless for me, as the map is so tiny I can’t tell where I’m at.

I like the BlackBerry maps program a lot as far as the map and GPS goes, but I need on that talks to me.

My VZ Navigator on my LG 8300 does that for $2.95 for 24 hours. MUCH better deal than the $10/month Telenav program on the BB (and there is no free trial with Telenav, so I have no idea if it is worth it.) Is there a minimum # of months you have to sign up with Telenav?

    Nathan Frost says:

Instead of clicking “Next” to step through each spoken direction, I would like Infospace Find It! to use my Blackberry 8830’s GPS to automatically detect when I need to act on the next direction, and read the direction at that time. This is the only feature Infospace Find It! needs to be best-of-breed in every respect; without it, I need to use another application.

Will this feature be added to Infospace Find It!, and if so, when?

Alternatively, is there another application that has this feature?
