Unboxing: Nokia E65

I’m gonna’ start this off by saying how cool of a slider this is! As soon as you pick it up you instantly appreciate the build quality and detail on the phone. The sliding mechanism works great — no hangups, no real forcefull pushing. Something that was suprising is how thin, and small the device is. This model in particular is the mocha/silver colored combination and the feel of the phone is great — the texture of it, and the leather back really make it stand out. What Nokia has done is really aimed at the business market like everyone knows except, they added useful features unlike a lot of other companies. We have a dedicated conference call button by the d-pad, a dedicated mute button, phonebook button, and web browser button. Genius! Come on, how many times are you on a call wishing to mute it except you have to fend for yourself by digging through menus to try and find a mute option. One feature which isn’t very Nokia-like is the camera. Although it’s a 2 mega-pixel it doesn’t have a flash, or auto-focus and really doesn’t spit out good, solid pics. The video quality wasn’t as bad, and the speakers were pretty good. Click on for the rest of the unboxing shots!

conference, phonebook, browser, mute buttons.

the detail on the phone is incredible.

What a crap it is!
I want to warn all people considering this model. Don’t! I’ve made a mistake of entrusting in the brand and not checking any independent forums _before_ purchase.
Got one a few ways ago – it was a brand new model, but had to have the simlock taken off, as networks didn’t match. This voids my warranty to each I intelligently agreed. I remember me saying to the guy – well the phone is new and Nokia is reliable, so why bother.
Now, the keypad light is gone and I’m impatiently waiting for all other problems to develop. How thrilling.
I’ll dump this crap through an auction site in a two months or so, when I will renew my contracts. Hope the auction will be popular. After all, if someone badly neeeds this phone, they can buy it for half the price and already broken.
Oh, and bloody texting has been modified in a way that “reduced language support” which earlier allowed for special characters in my languge to be converted to non-accented latin letters, no longer works. It works bloody the same as “full support” so why bother putting this option in the first place (did work in past models though). Now each SMS is 62 or something characters long. How briliant. I’m sure all the operators are so grateful.
I’m gona convert to fridge-like handsets by LG. I &%%$&(# promise.
the backlight and keypad light work with the sensor, meaning, that when the sensor gets much light, the keys won’t light at all, and the backlight will be weaker.
try covering the light sensor (the right corner’s button-like), and see what happens.
hope it’ll figure some people’s problem.
cya.
i’m on my second one, i got it exactly a day ago and my back light broke… and now i’m on my second one which i got today and it broke again!! wat the hell!
Experiences:
- No smileys in SMS’es. you have to manually choose the single symbols
of a smiley (count the keystrokes for this…)
- Alarm not logical (when creating a new appointment and setting the alarm, why should it then be necessary to choose the alarm, navigate to the activate alarm button, activating the alarm and THEN set the time of the alarm?)
- Cannot disable vibrating on email only. you have to disable vibration in general. Annoying when you need to use a silent profile but want to have vibration on calls and SMS’es, but not on email (I get 150 emails a day).
- No Flash integration in browser (seriously – there is a flash player in the phone, but not for use in the browser)
- The voice for reading mails and voice recognition is in English only. Ever tried listening to a Danish mail read with English phonetics? Ugly…
- The phone has a supersmart integration option to a navigator… but cannot integrate to a Garmin Nüvi, probably the most used navigator in the world…
- Quickoffice is useless. No images in Word documents. Poor pdf rendering. Excel incompatible with many files.
- No stopwatch, countdown etc. Default in most Nokia phones, but on the E65 you have to purchase it.
- No shortcut key combinations (except on main menus). Common actions like “mark mail as unread” requires 8-10 strokes.
…that was jus my 5 cents off the top of myhead. On a bad day I might find 100 more annoyances with this phone…
At first glance I loved this phone, it is truely beautiful, but a Sony Ericsson Z520i is a more reliable phone. My phone buzzes, the side buttons stopped working after a month and then two weeks after that the all keys except the power button have stopped functioning, so I can switch it on but do jack, beautiful.
JJ, to make the voice to read mails in danish you have to download(for free) the danish language from nokia website. I have done this for greek language and it worked great.
You can have stopwatch for free [not legally(cracked)] but I dont recommended it.
For navigation you can use Garmin Xt. Its great.
About the other stuff you said, I totally agree(mainly for the flash integration in the browser).
Yeah bit of a crusty phone and 4 months after getting it the paint is peeling off on d-pad and around the rim of the screen.
- Keeps saying ‘use in offline mode’ when i swap my Malay/Aus simcards.
- Bad camera, whats the use of a camera with no flash? And a 3 second delay on the picture?
Gonna try handing it in to Optus for a replacement.

Wow winston 3g! If you could learn to spell maybe attempt the pdf user guide available from the Nokia europe website. I have managed to set the font larger without any problem, no paint has peeled off, and the backlights are more reliable than our domestic electricity supply. Did you know that the reason the backlights do not function in the day is to conserve battery power? So before you send it in for a repair of something that is not broken consider trying to use them at night. Maybe our handsets come from different factories, but I am on my second Nokia E65 because the first one was stolen. And we work very well together, without any problems. Go rush out and buy a samsung. There is a difference between a business phone like the E65 and a mickey mouse samsung.
@ js
pdf user guide available from the Nokia europe website. I have managed to set the font larger without any problem,
how did you manage to change the font size, I’ve read the pdf user guide but can’t find anything on it
does anyone know how to add greek language software onto the e65?
theo, could please explain to me where you downloaded the greek language and how to install it on the e65.
i rang nokia and they said they do not know.
Im on my FOURTH NOKIA E65
The features of the phone are excelent for the price….BUT
All mine freeze up, reboot, switch off, have a bad battery life, My keys on the front stop responding untill restarted. The people at Nokia Care (Australia, WA) tel me (After having 3, and reparing the 4th twice) that it might be the memory card Aplications …! After I told her all I had was music and pictures they said, that could be the problem aswel! She says its like a Viruse and that mobiles dont have stuff like computers to stop that! BUT HOLD UP. I had installed Trend Micro Security For The Nokia e65 (Came with my PC, version for added support for portable devices) When I told her that she replied, “Oh, Well we can book it in for repair…” The phone boasts about all its features but quite frankly if it cant even store music and pictures, Let ALONE Applications, it’s not living up to it’s name. NO ONE buys a PC expecting them to tell you, You cant put any programs on there because the PC wont work right!!! Nokia REFUSE to provide me with a knew model Nokia, or Knew e65. They told me to go to 3 (My service Provider) but I dont see how Three have more resposibility over a Nokia faulty mobile over Nokia Themself!
I will never recomend Nokia again to anyone. LG, Sony Ericson OR Samsung for me!!!!
Very UNHAPPY COSTOMER!!
Email me if u have had similar problems, or any support from Nokia (Or advice)
Thanx hypno_57@hotmail.com
My E65 has been relegated to a SIM free VOIP phone for home use only.
Like many other commentors I have to agree that the E65 is a disgrace. Nokia should be burying their heads in the sand over this one!
I’ve done A LOT of research since my problems with the E65 started a year ago. I found that most Nokia phones are garbage. I will NEVER, EVER buy another Nokia product… and I tell anyone who’ll listen the same!
Stay clear of ANYTHING Nokia!!!
Could the people who say that the font size on the E65 tell me exactly how it’s done. I got the E65 two days ago and I’m about to bring it back to the shop.
Also having a calendar that will not allow one to repeat an alarm every day/week/month is just nuts…..and this is supposed to be aimed at business.
How do I get the keypad lights on again…..pls.
The paint scratches very easily, very fast. If you buy one, be sure to take care of it very well.
Tryed to get a replacement case from the Nokia repair shop in Mexico. Said the case was 130 USD. Almost a fifth of the price of the phone.
Multimedia Gallery stopped working properly, so I cannot look at my photos. Even after firmware upgrade.
Wifi, works ok. Have used Fringle with skype with some success.
Never new the lights in the keypad lighted up.
Practical phone, although imperfect.
well, E65 is a good cell phone, though it’s kinda difficult.
anyway, i faced a problem that i can’t solve in using it and i hope some one solve it to me, as i used to put a password to the phone, and i changed the sim card and tried to open it again but the password is wrong,
how do i store a file on my phone with out it going to the message centre.
i will like it to go stright to the memory card
My Nokia E65 started randomly beeping and hitting out symbols. The top right corner keypad button stopped working. When I spoke about it to friends, the same thing had happened to them. Mine was just over the 1 yr warranty, the other lucky people were within so got a replacement. The dealer new of this problem and said it couldn’t be fixed? If it was a car there would have been a re-call! Keypad backlight doesn’t work either. Almost a good phone if it kept working.
