Unboxing: Cingular BlackBerry 8800

Yes, the BlackBerry 8800 has started to ship to Cingular Retail stores. I’m not going to bore everyone with the details because by now they have been covered, through, and through. Let’s just say RIM has refined the device a lot compared to the test unit I have. Wall Street, CEO’s, Corporate America…this is your device. Check out the full unboxing after the jump!

God, that almost makes me want to move to Germany….T-mobile got the Pearl first, isn’t it fair we get the 8800 first! I mean…I want it :-( . Curse my lack of patients. TBG, any idea when (or even if) T-mobile will be getting this sexy beast? If not, I’m ordering my pearl ASAP. Sidekick died :-D I hated that thing…

For those of you who on T-Mobile USA (like myself) and are jonesing for an 8800 (like myself), GSMPS is able to unlock Cingular units for $29.99.

I used GSMPS to unlock my 8700c back in the day prior to the arrival of the 8700g, so I can vouch for Adam’s service.

Can you take some pictures of BlackBerry Maps for 8800? I havent seen any pictures and it seems that most of the Cingular 8800s didn’t come with it. I’m just wondering if they’ve improved it, because the version I have on my 7290 is a steaming pile.

I can’t get BB Maps to download to my 8800. I went to http://www.blackberry.com/maps but when I click on “download” it says; “sorry, your device does not support BlackBerry Maps at this time.” I tried Google Maps and it downloads but fails to work. I also cannot get Gmail to work after it is installed. Why did I buy the 8800?

I just got off the phone with Cingular support who conferenced in BB support. Apparently Cingular is not allowed to officially sell the 8800 until tomorrow (Wednesday). Until then BB will not discuss the 8800 or provide technical support.

My main problem is when connected to USB I think it only sees it as a mass storage device and not as a BB and I am therefore unable to install BB Maps – it keeps saying it is not a supported device. :(

    Dave says:

tcrawford, I’m assuming you have the Desktop software to support the 8800 installed on your PC? This should provide the necessary drivers to the OS so that you can use it for more than a mass storage device. It sounds to me like these drivers aren’t loaded.

Thanks Dave – I tried re-installing the Desktop software but it still tells me that the device is not supported at this time. Maybe it will be supported tomorrow – the official release date.

Boy Genius, did your Cingular 8800 come with BB Maps installed?

How about a side by side comparison – the 8800 vs. the 8100 pearl ? I know I’d love to see an actual comparison.

I just checked with TeleNav and they do not yet support the 8800 and would not say when they would. Basically, if you are an early adopter, you take a few steps backwards until everyone (including BlackBerry) offer compatible products.

Right now, there is no support for Gmail, Google Talk, Google Maps, BB Maps, and TelNav applications on the 8800.

Also, if you navigate to Options > Theme and select Download Theme, Cingular hijacks you to their Media Mall instead of it taking you to to BB page to download Themes, Images, Games and Ringtones (for free).

Not too impressed with the front looking part of the Cingular device…Looks cheap almost…of course, that could be the big ass CINGULAR logo at the bottom of it…

Good ole sugar cube trick should do the trick.

Does the multimedia capability allow you to listen to mp3 attachments to email? I’d love to be able to listen to my Vonage voice mails that way…. Beats navigating to the web site on the little device.

GregpH – I sent myself an email with an MP3 attached but it did not allow me to open the attachment – so I guess the answer is no it will not play MP3 files attached in emails.

tcrawford – Thanks for trying that out! Seems like they coulda offered that in this model, but I guess we wait a little longer….

Of course that won’t stop me from upgrading from my battered 8700c. =)
