Unboxing: Cingular BlackBerry 8800

Yes, the BlackBerry 8800 has started to ship to Cingular Retail stores. I’m not going to bore everyone with the details because by now they have been covered, through, and through. Let’s just say RIM has refined the device a lot compared to the test unit I have. Wall Street, CEO’s, Corporate America…this is your device. Check out the full unboxing after the jump!

So, don’t hold us ins suspense! Tell us about the device. How is the display…keyboard…updated software, etc.?

Is the case every bit as shiny and toy-like as photos depict? I would imagine this thing is going to be a magnet for fingerprints.

Man, fingerprint magnet! Keyboard takes some getting used to…it is nice though. The OS is very speedy, internet browser, GPS all work pretty well. Can’t think of one problem with the device in terms of using it on a daily basis, aslong as the fingerprints and keyboard don’t bother you — i’m not mad at it. Just wish it came with a plastic holster and not the leather one.

Yes, there shouldn’t be a “sell date” as soon as stores get them they can sell them.

Actually the cingular stores cant sell them yet as the pricing is not coming up for them when they try scanning it in. All the stores should have them already. I picked up my 8800 this morning (FREE !!!) from my guy at the cingular store and he said that the POS system will not be able to handle the transaction till the 21st.

    Boy Genius,

Which device would you say would be better a 8800 or the new WM6 device, for a power business user?

If your email focused, then the 8800. Although it does make an attempt at media it’s not great. Get a Windows Mobile device if you need hardcore applications, and streaming media, etc…

I stopped in my local Cingular owned store here in Florida, and they received their shipment today, and are ready to sell as well. The unit looks great, especially next to my Pearl. I don’t care for the midnight blue color and would prefer black, but I would get a case ans clip anyway from Seidio or another company. The clip that comes with the phone would be suitable for most corporate types, but not for me I guess. The screen is just as advertised, and this will be a huge seller for the corporate types who are looking to upgrade from their 8700’s. I’ll be waiting on the next Cingular 8800 model that has a camera, and hopefully an upgrade to 3G or above. Very cool to hold one in my hands today, and made me think that I might have wanted one if I hadn’t just bought a Pearl as they were rolled out.

How about some pics or descriptions of that case. Does it have the standard swivel clipped? Still bummed about the lack of the traditional plastic holster.

I am concerned that that little hole in the bottom right is the microphone? I certainly hope it is NOT! If it is.. I can see it getting covered while holding the phone between your ear/chin and your shoulder.

    Is it the microphone?

The Pearl keeps the microphone hole below the bottom so that it cannot get covered accidentally. I certainly hope that is not the microphone hole…

People can hear me pretty well, so I don’t think the mic placement is a problem. Check a couple posts back where I did a short review on the leather 8800 case, that’s the same case the Cingular unit comes with. Also just noticed that the leather strap that goes over the 8800 when it is in the case covers the speaker, muffling it. Damn it RIM! I’m sooo getting custom plastic cases made from China, whos with me!?

Hmm..this is going to be interesting because I’m simply leaning towards this device for its unstoppable reliablity. All my blackberries have served me well. Although I did flirt with symbian for a bit while on the Nokia E61. From a design perspective its beautiful ..was a little buggy with the latest firmware updates. I am awaiting the Nokia E90 and E61i just as much as the next. But for now I think this will probably suffice my needs more then ever considering I just got my 17" Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro :). No more begging to have the end-all-be-all-in-one device (yeah right, the lust will never stop) Oh and Kudos to the quick 8800 speaker review. Good to know we are back loud and clear

Any date for the t-mobile release? Also is t-mobile getting two devices or one ( one with camera and wifi and the other with neither) and finally how is the media player? It would be pretty cool to play videos on the subway…(dreams…)
