Use Your OQO 2 As a Cell Phone!

Word on the tech street is that a company is now providing VoIP service to OQO 2 customers, you know the one we’re doing a review on? VoIP combined with UMPC’s is nothing new, but the inclusion of a Verizon Ev-DO card opens up a world of possibilities. In conjunction with a standard Bluetooth headset, users are able to make free unlimited voice calls over the Verizon data network. This effectively eliminates the need for a traditional cell phone plan. Monthly costs amount to around $50 for the Verizon data service and $20 for the unlimited VOIP plan, making this an attractive alternative to footing a cell bill on top of your existing data plan. Except Verizon will throw you off their unlimited plan if you use too much data. Their Terms of Service don’t allow you to use Video audio or Voip. With Verizon’s unlimited data you are limited to e-mail, and some light web browsing.

The other problem with an OQO (or other UMPC for that matter) as a cell phone is receiving calls. Unless the thing is powered on you don’t know if someone is calling you, and the power only lasts for 3 hours. Not too practical.
