Crossbow Upgrade Coming to T-Mobile Dash?

Word out of Howard Forums is that T-Mobile will be releasing a Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for current owners of the Dash (a.k.a. HTC Excaliber). Although unconfirmed as of yet, the Pink T’s engineering department is quoted as a source, lending credability to the argument. If this turns out to be true, it could mean big things in terms of backwards compatibility, as the Dash’s relatively anemic OMAP 850 processor means that Crossbow might be useful for owners of slightly older devices. Stay tuned for more info.

UPDATE: According to the official Microsoft WM6 press release, the Dash will, in fact, be getting the Crossbow Update within the next 2 months. From the 3GSM release: "…in the United States, the popular T-Mobile Dash will be updated with Windows Mobile 6 and be available in the coming months. Current T-Mobile Dash owners will also be able to upgrade existing devices with Windows Mobile 5.0 to Windows Mobile 6…"

T-Mobile? Great, but what about those of us that purchased the unlocked HTC S620? Are we screwed, or does HTC plan to offer an upgrade path?

One device down, one to go. I’m glad I am going to be able to upgrade my Dash to Windows Mobile 6, hopefully my 700wx can get some of that action too.

I have been using the WM6 T-Mobile beta for about a month now. There are a few bugs as it is still in beta, but it seem to be much better then WM5 (I found this software to be rushed out). Internet speeds went up about 20-50k, a bit more stable, and some annoyances fixed (like you can actually setup a different background, without it resizing it so it does not cover whole screen). I still wonder why they branded it as WM6, as it is more of an update then a new version.

    Tmob Emp. says:

Yeah so i istalled WM6 for the dash its offically out and i am not really pleased heres Y:
    1) after installing it left me with almost no memory to add programs. WHAT THE DID HTC/MICROSOFT/TMOBILE DO ? I installed IMplus ALONE which we know is a fairly small app. I have now 8.98mb of storage for programs.

2)They combined SMS and MMS into 1 option. If you remember when you went to message center u saw TXT msg then MMS msg and 2 different selections. Having Both as 1 selection is cool BUT now when you want to send a new TXT msg and u click on menu then new now u have to choose between SMS and MMS. Ok i could live with that BUT they went and made SMS option #2. I may be a lil harsh on this 1 BUT i know i send more SMS than MMS i think it should be the other way around. However they can argue it was done Alpha order.

    3) Still on SMS dont you think by now they would change the way u choose who send sms to, i.e; when u compose a new TXT and u on the recipient field (where u sending the msg to.. the TO: ) WHY is it still numeric ? WHY u still gotta to menu and select ADD RECIPIENT. If i remember correctly on the MDA you could start typing the persons name and it will select it for you. Now for those people who remember numbers and dont have a problem thats fine BUT when u have a couple hunder numbers in your contacts its annoying

    4) Emailing this is where the fun is/was. For those of us that actually send and recieve email on your DASH u would remember its not “PUSH” unless you have an MS-EXCHANGE email. The way around it for me was setting it up on Tmobile website and configuring triggers. Basicly t-mobile servers constantly check your emails and then send you txt msg to let u know theres new email. NOW what the developers did (either MS or HTC or Tmob) was have a feature called triggers, basicly when the phone got those SMS it would automatically download the emails for you (once u had it configured correctly) and i loved that feature. The easiest way was as i said setup the email on TMOB website then on your phone you got to “Setup My Email” APP and choose download from server..blah blah… once done u got yourself PULL email. I will admit at times it was slow BUT u got your emails and you didnt have to choose to have your phone check email every “X” amount of mins. Well that is no longer there. The new “Setup My Email” APP doesnt have an option to download from server. IT does give you clear choices on what emails to setup, i.e; HOTMAIL/YAHOO/AIM/OUTLOOK EXCHANGE/OTHER which i think its pretty cool because i had tooooo many people complaining they cant setup their email (yeah i work for TMOB so what :-P ). Its pretty easy to use BUT now you gotta choose how often you want the phone to check your emails. NOW if you use your phone for WORK and not pleasure and your work email isnt XCHANGE and you recieve alot of email then you gotta set it for every 5 or 10 or even 30 mins which will basicly kill your battery. You better look for a utility belt to carry extra batteries and chargers, OR switch to a BLACKBERRY (which i think would be better if you recieve alot of emails anyhow unless you NEED to have a WM device). That said I do like the new option that allows you to send a email when your press SEND and not having to go back and press SEND/RECEIVE and it will automatically receive any waiting email (probably the main reason Y i got WM6 on my DASH i fell inlove with in when i had the MDA WM6). NOW if we still had email triggers and this new option to send emails right away TOGETHER then this wil basicly make the DASH do PUSH email no need for a BLACKBERRY (on that note if anybody have the original tmob setup my email for the dash and figure out if it can work on the official release of WM6 with the new version of app let me know. I want a copy).

    5) Emailing part 2: Like i mention before the new setup email app is pretty cool. HOWEVER if you have 2 or 3 emails from the same provider, be it GMAIL (got like 6 ) or whoever and you wanted to check those emails. After setting them up you CANT go back and rename them, i.e; when you go to the messaging center you will be see:
    1. Text/Multimedia
    2. OUTLOOK Email
    3. gmail.com
    4. gmail.com1
    5. gmail.com2
OK HOW AM I GOIN TO REMEMBER WHICH IS WHICH ? The messed up part about it is there is an option when you go to settings for that current mailbox to change account display name BUT LIKE TRUE MICROSOFT it GRAYED OUT… BRILLIANT

    6) Can someone tell me why is there an option for HANDANGO INHAND in the start menu BUT when you click on it you will be sent to the website to download the program. HMMM next there will be shortcuts to try AOL for 30 days free or bundle programs we never goin use, its like buying a new PC and getting their crap from pre-installed.

Thats it for now unless i find more stuff i hate. For those out there think i am hating on WM6 or whatever. Dont get me wrong its a pretty cool OS not the best but it works. Theres just things on it that i think could have been done differently. Some of you may like it the way it is and some wouldnt. This is my opinion on things. There are things like on here. I like the fact that Office is now included and the new MSN messenger is included. Like i said its my opinion.

P.S. while writting this my phone frooze and i had to restart it now my phone mysteriously has more memory. Which is weird because i did restart my phone serveral times after upgrading. I also pulled the battery out while the phone was on and the memory didnt change. HMMMM i guess Bill G is a mind reader OR big bro is looking over my shoulder….. darm i shouldnt have went to that porn site last nite big bro may think ill of me

P.P.S: I just posted this in howard forums so i copied and pasted over here. Dont want people saying they read this already over there

I upgraded my Dash and it’s almost completely awesome. One of the gripes is that when you answer a call the music keeps playing but you can’t hear it. On Mobile 5 it would pause and pickup right where you left off.

Also if you upgrade and your phone gets stuck in a restart sequence…it could be your SIM. My SIM was 7 years old and when they put in a new card, it’s been working fine.

Having had two MDAs in quick succession (1st had a busted speaker; the 2nd software was so corrupt that Tmobile support gave up), the Dash is LOADS better, even with the quirks above. Additionally, I don’t miss the slider feature of the MDA one bit. And the Dash fits in my pocket. (No more “is that an MDA or are you happy to see me?” comments from colleagues.)

    @DAniel – check out this article http://www.asktheadmin.com/2007/05/tmobile-dash-upgraded-to-wm6-and.html

They upgraded the unlocked device and only had to re-application unlock.

The SIM unlock stayed. They have some great Dash tips/tricks and settings for diff networks
