iPhone Deemed as “Perfect”

Andy Ihnatko of the Chicago Sun Times was one of the lucky few who was able to demo the new Apple iPhone after the Macworld keynote and he had nothing but good things to say. He states, "After 30 seconds, I was already typing faster with the iPhone than I ever have with any other phone". He goes on to praise the unit and its "liquid" smooth OS but he also went on to say that Apple refuses to allow any 3rd party software developers to produce apps for the device, but we already knew that. Read on for the rest of his hands on feedback.

Perfect?! Whoa, slow down there turbo. Perfect for the author perhaps, but I’ll judge it when I can actually hold one in my hand. And from what is generally known, the device is anything but.

    1. No third party apps (although, I’m certain there will be ways around this, no?)
    2. No 3G. and…
    3. Full retail retail price of 499 to 599.

That’s not what I consider “perfect.” Even if you disqualify the first two above, you will have to concede that any device worthy of being considered “perfect” will at least be generally affordable or at least discounted considering the 2yr. commitment that they want. I have no desire to pick up this device but I will be watching it. I’ll wait and see how Gen 2 shapes up.

    Perfect? Perfect?!

Look, the iPhone is very sexy and very nifty, no doubt about it. But put the Kool-Aid down for a second and realize that it isn’t perfect.

I mean, at the very least, I could use some third-party support. Oh, no, wait, none of that for us. How is that perfect? There’s none of the high-speed 3G goodness. How is that perfect?

Those two facts right there knock it out of the “perfect” league. It’s hawt, don’t get me wrong. But don’t get carried away either.

No, Apple did not say there would be no third-party software for the iPhone. They said there would be no open API – that is, people would have to go through Apple to write software for the iPhone, to keep the quality of software up to Apple’s standards so that the user experience is not compromised.

Well, considering how 99.9% of all the software developers out there couldn’t possibly make software that good, I guess it’s sort of preventing most 3rd party software developers from producing iPhone software. But look, if Microsoft can’t make software good enough (shoot, Entourage in Office for Mac’s STILL isn’t completely compatible with Exchange after all these years!) for Apple, who can?

But for those who think they can make software good enough, all they need is the confidence to show it to Apple and see. Just make sure to register the copyright for it fist. ;-)

3G support is coming. When it’s in more than a few cities in the US, it will be in the iPhone. Thus it’s a non-issue.
