Battery Bottleneck

You know there is a serious problem in Mr. Rogers Neighborhood when the Samsung BlackJack comes with two batteries in the box. The wireless industry itself is facing a problem with the power these new phones are using. At this rate we’ll have to carry a charger with us constantly, or a backpack full of batteries. Why are we still using  the old Lithium-Ion technology in these "bad batts"? Why haven’t phone companies fully embraced new batteries like Lithium-Polymer? The only company who uses Li-Po (I’m sorry, had to do that) is Sony Ericsson and those phones have around 8-9 hours of talk time on a single charge. With 3G technology like HSDPA and EV-DO REV A launching and in our faces  who wants to hear, "Are those batteries in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?".

Isn’t Li-Poli the gel that can fill any container, giving them more capacity(chemistry) ? If so they may just not want to fill less rigid containers for cell phones.

Hey Charles, you realize that BG already said that in the article, right? It helps to read instead of skim sometimes…

I didn’t miss the point. Sometimes one manufacturer doing something doesn’t make it safe(notice all the battery explosions). I read about these batteries three years ago and wondered why they didn’t get anywhere then. From what I remember it’s the same chemistry, with the same capacity, just in gel form.

I have since moved on to believing fuel cells are the way to go!

Fuel cells the way to go?
Where are you going to put the hydrogen or methane generators? Do you know how much those will cost? Or do you wish to buy it everytime you need a charge? They may be the way to go for emergency power, but for regular day to day use a better battery and an electrical outlet are the most convenient.

Wow finally some honesty, no other sites are mentioning the fact that the battery life is terrible. I wouldn’t have bought the phone if I knew that. I was trying to get the word out somehow, but you guys did it.
    Thanks Charlie.

yeah these batteries are really nice, however they are still extremely volitile and kind of short lived if you charge them every night, i had an SE 520a and i just want to note that the small battery in that phone actually contained enough boom to incenerate the phone, a buddy of mine had a phone like mine and he left it in his car all day and it actually exploded and just left scatterd pieces of the phone all over his interior, i witnessed a 4800 milliamp kokam poly pack obliterate an RC helicopter.
