Unboxing: Cingular Palm Treo 680

If you were ever on the EDGE (pun intended) about getting a Treo, these unboxing pics should help you make up your mind! Straight from the Cingular warehouse I bring you the Treo 680. I was excited to see this device in the final retail version which is pretty much the exact same as the Treo 750, except with Palm OS. It feels like the 750 is lighter, and easier to use as the buttons on the 680 are incredibly stiff. The same goes for the 5-way d-pad. I found reception to be OK. Sometimes dropping down to one bar, and then jumping up to five. Who knows. Click on for the pics!

After much debate and research, I’ve decided to get a Treo 680. It meets all my current needs, and since it is not over the top and laden with technology I won’t need for now, this is a perfect first Smartphone for me. My Cingular dealer has one with my name on it for a pick up early Friday morning-the stock was in today. Who knows, when the Treo 750 finally comes rolling in, and if Palm offers the same type of rebate for upgrade, I will take a look at it then. Thanks so much BG for all your input here and on Engadget Mobile; it was really helpful to someone like me who was a novice about all the fuss, and enjoyed the ride to this point. I feel much more knowledgeable about my purchase, what I’m getting myself into, and identifying what my needs really are. The Treo 680 is certainly a great step up for me in that regard, and I’m looking forward to making it work within my world.

same as the palm 750? not quite…
    - no 3G support (like the 750)
    - worse camera (vga on 680, 1.3 mpix on the 750)

    just to name a few…

it’s almost the same as the 650…

Hey BG, what phone do you use on a regular basis? You have access to all these phones. How about a post of the phones you currently use?

    Thanks.

Hey BG, when’s the 750 supposed to drop in Cingular stores? And will it only be M$ Windoze ? I was looking to get it in a Palm OS, given that I have a Mac

    P.S.
(I have an Intel-based one, but don’t wanna make my life too complicated)

Hey Chris get the Missing Sync from http://markspace.com. Works flawlessly with syncing Palm OS or WinMo with my Mactel.

I already posted a comment on this, but of course boy genius deleted it. I never did say anything inappropriate…he just didnt like that what i was saying!!

It is good that BG has his own webpage and all and that he broke off from engaget and all….He is a rainmaker and does break all the cool new stories, etc..but why can he not admit that he was WRONG this time and had hundreds of bloggers and several large BB webpages fooled….He may want to wait a few days before “breaking” the big story..which of course was false….I think the RIM and Cingular Execs are rolling over BGR’s breaking news!!!

If you dont see this post later, it is because I was censored

Ok, well first off no comment was deleted. Now on the to the second part. The information I provide is given to me by many different proven sources and informants. The Cingular Pearl info was off an internal Cingular powerpoint presentation which was only a couple days old at the time. It is not my fault if Cingular decides to delay a product launch, or any other issue uncontrolable by me. All I do is report what I can, and feel that I have done a good enough job. If you don’t agree with a point of view that is fine, I do what I do, and I try to be the best at it. If i’m wrong I will certainly admit it, the fact is I wasn’t wrong. The information I provided was dead-on. The Pearl started shipping November 21st, I never said you can walk into a store and buy one that day.

The Treo 680 is nothing more than a cosmetic update to the 650. Its a great introduction to the PDA world but, nothing more. Yo BG keep me posted if you get any info on a Treo with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 and 128megs of internal memory.

As I’ve posted elsewhere, the Treo 680 is going back as soon as The Pearl arrives, I don’t care for the 680 in many respects, and I want Pushmail anyway.

I have had the Treo 680 for several days. Love the size, seems so much smaller than it truly is. Faster, neat new OS updates, such pressing he center nav button to bring up messages, texting back to a caller, etc. Sure it could use a better camera, but.. Hey the OS is seamless.. I cannot understand Windows Mobile users..ugh. One HUGE ISSUE, the battery is so, so, so very bad. I have to rechard by mid day my battery is on 80% after two hours and no phone calls and just a few text messages…. aside from that .. cool.

I’m really having a hard time deciding between the Treo 680, and Black Berry Pearl. I have T-Mobile, but Palm sells the 680 unlocked on their website. I called up T-mo asking if I could get the internet features with this phone unlocked and they never got back to me. If anyone knows if it will work it will be a big help. I’m not sure if this has been stated, but I can’t find if it does or doesn’t have EDGE. I have a SK3 right now and hate it..I need something more pro.

Short and sweet…I returned my Treo 680 and love the new Cingular Pearl. The main reasons are size and push e-mail. I did like the Treo form, message feature and ease of use, but The Pearl has won me over and I expect to keep it long term.
